Computer is acting funny
    #11368701 - 11/02/09 02:01 PM (8 years, 19 days ago)

Just switched out my power supply because my comp wouldn't turn on. The computer's fine now, but it lost power a couple of times and I had to turn it on again. I'm using a 600 watt PS, I had a 580 Watt PS before and the pc ran ok for 2 years. There were times before however when I would come to the comp in the morning and it was off, but it always would power back on, unti recently, thats when I bought the new PS. Is it just the fact that I'm using a cheap $30 600w ps? The last one was even cheaper, and I think that's the reason it shit out after a couple years. I'll posty my configuration to see if you think I'm running a too low powered PS.

Athlon 64 x2 socket 939
biostar 6100 m9 mobo
3 gigs ram
512 mb ati video card
3 hard drives
1 dvd drive
1 media card reader drive
2 exhaust fans

Low power? 600W? That's not low.

A new 600 W PSU should just work. What happens when "it loses power"? When does this happen or is it random?

Have you checked the event log?

It happened randomly and when I powered it up again, it failed about 4 seconds into bootup. I know it's not low powered, I was careful to make sure I was powering my system sufficiently before, so I just bought one with more power. It seems to be doing ok now, however. I really think it's just the cheap PS.

Yeah, seems good. All info entries. CPU temps are good, fan seems fine. Makes a lot of noise on startup but I'm sure that's just the fans / cheap ps

it can be low. there is no defined/legal standard for how to measure/market PSU wattage. marketing teams display the "true" wattage and not the "effective" wattage (the only measurement that matters).

if it is a 600W PSU that was only $30 i would assume that youre getting 600 "true" watts. the "effective" wattage will be a lot less.

personally, i really only buy antec PSUs. they are more money but i know they will work. brownouts can cause damage to your hardware. id rather be safe than sorry.

when it fails during startup does it just instantly power down or does the screen change first? my guess is that it's not power supply related. maybe the hard drives are going? that would explain the loud noises.

It powered down maybe 4 or 5 seconds after I turned it on. As far as the HDs I hear ya, but it's never a clicking sound which is what I usually experience with systems. Also, the computer did not boot at all with the prior PSU, and I tried to many times, believe me.

pull the side panel off and try to turn it on. see if the fans are spinning. it could be a heat issue also. if the cpu is getting too hot the bios usually shuts down the machine to protect the hardware.

CPU temps are normal, I've been monitoring them.

Edit: If anything, I think it may be the HD as stated above. The only peculiar thing is that it booted right up with the new PS. Maybe the off time gave the hd "a rest" and now it operates? We'll see soon enough, it's been ok all day after the first malfunctions.

if you swapped the psu and its all good id say that was probably youre problem.

you could always check this out if you want to be 100% sure. sounds of failing hard drives. see if anything sounds similar to your computer/hard drive:
