yes, they suck. or rather, they suck at what they are supposed to do. they DO NOT suck air hardly at all. consumer reports rated them the worst of all the air cleaners they tested.

The Ionic Breeze is a total piece of crap. It's worthless. You ever see those infomercials? They show you charts in the background tricking you into thinking they work, but they never actual show any data. And the places that test them were probably paid off. I even have the February 2002 Consumer Reports right infront of me.

Let me quote what it says:
"The other electronic-percipitator model, the Sharper Image SI637 Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifer, proved unimpress in our tests. Ads for this unit tout its silence and miserly power consumption. Both are attributable to its lack of a fan. Bit so is its disappointing performance; we found almost no measurable reduction in airborne particles"

The highest rated one is the Friedrich C-90A with a 3 filter system. First is a pre-filter that filters large particles. Second is a electronic-precipitator. In between the second and third filter is a fan which actually moves air unlike the Sharper Image. Finally there's a activated carbon filter that removes any odors. It's over $400, but you don't have to spend about $130 a year for HEPA filters because it's washable, and another $72 for that carbon filter because it doesn't perform well, but there's no loss in performance if it is removed.
