updated pix of the cased bag.I have no idea what this is... There is coral like growth and fuzzy balls too? I squeezed one and it was fairly dense. Also pix of the 3 tubs of straw i did at the beginning of the week. I'm pasteurizing some garden soil/old potting soil to case them with right now.

They are in the basement where it is a constant 68-71 degrees. Should i cold shock it maybe?

I don't know, I never cold shocked them. Too early anyway, as with the casing, to me the straw does not look completely colonized. But with this tough species it shouldn't be a problem.

That yellow stuff is really weird. Reminds me of hericium with too much CO2. If those corals are primordia, we might soon find out what it is.

I had 2 bags of colonized straw. I mixed one with some hickory chips that were pasteurized , and the other bag i expanded to about 8 bags total of straw. The myc is coming through the soil on the tubs i cased earlier in the week. How long till i should remove the foil , move to the FC and begin misting? SO 2-3 weeks and shrooms?

update of the 1st bag i cased. No idea what this is . MYC ran up sides and down a few inches on the outside, the coral growth is starting to die back a little. The cotton ball growths are still getting bigger. Any ideas what the hell this is?

No, it won't behave like an agaricus or like cubes. Like didjin_d suggested earlier, I would apply another casing layer, increase FAE immediately and let the surface get dry. You don't want a fully colonized casing here, you want some kind of barrier between mycelium and air.

OK , i misread his original post , I  thought he meant to not let the casing colonize 100% , but really meant to let it grow through the casing , but not all the way to the top...duh . So i just cased them again with a 1/2" layer of old potting soil. I removed the foil. Now i just wait ? Or should i put in my mushroom greenhouse and mist? Leave in back of basement and mist occasionally? I also noticed in one area of myc that came through a roundish white knot looking growth, future shroom? Thanks for all the help , it is greatly appreciated!!!

ALso i just was just thinking how they grow in the wild. Would putting a layer of wood mulch or wood chips on top of this be even better?

I am more successful with pure soil casings, when the soil gets occasionally misted, like outside on my balcony at a shady spot with plants growing on top or a thin layer of hay to prevent too much evaporation. In high humidity and with a fully colonized casing, often nothing happens. Also don't put it dark.

So i cased it 2x , the 2nd time i used very dry soil. Despite the dry soil the myc has still grown almost all the way through. Ill try to post some pix tomorrow.

I have had the 3 tubs in my basement with 12 hours of light, misting every few days. I noticed a few days ago that the myc was starting to knot up. I took it and put it out side into my GH. I came back tonight from fishing and noticed a small wine cap growing! The spawn expaned to straw was too wet , got trich and bacterial contam. I buried these outside. The straw spawn expanded to the pasteurized hickory chips is doing great. Really need to get these outside before it gets too cold.

Cool. I also lost mine, which were growing on straw.

The first flush resulted in 1 mushroom in each tub . Second flush 1 tub put up 2 pins , but i picked these to clone.

Well... at least something popped up  Even just a few mushrooms is way more satisfying than nothing.

While cloning may help you get a strain that works in your enviro, I would consider getting a new strain/culture for future experiments.

Cheers,

I think it was only a few because of lots of fungus gnat larvae in the substrate and maybe some trich also. When colonized substrate from this clone was buried outside , it produced nice flushes. I just cloned 4 different specimens last night. These were all local and much larger then the others.

I also used  the colonized hickory chips for an outdoor bed. I dug a hole, threw straw in the bottom , put a log in the middle , sprinkled the hickory chips around , more sticks and twigs and leaves,  straw and more hickory chips. then i covered with about 3" of dirt.I started it about 2 months ago. About 2 weeks ago i poked a whole to look in , almost all the straw and sticks looked to be colonized. Hopefully this bed will last a while with the big log to draw food from.

you've inspired me to play with some indoor wine caps as well. just sorting out some substrate now. was gonna do it on pasteurised wheat straw and oak planings (i know planings aren't best, but these are really fine so am hoping it'l work out...) and stick it all in a cardboard box...
