Blackpool bus passenger in shock at mushroom discovery....[UK]
    #11366681 - 11/02/09 01:16 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

November 1 2009 - Blackpool Gazette

EVERYBODY is told to consider greener modes of transport – but has Blackpool Transport taken the message too far?
Regular bus user Dean Tomlinson (below) was horrified to discover he was sharing his journey with a small colony of mushrooms which had taken up residence under the back seat.

Mr Tomlinson was travelling from his workplace Orbit Internet, on Clifton Square, Lytham, to his home on Cunliffe Road, Blackpool, when he made the fungi discovery last Monday.

He was so shocked he took a picture of the mushrooms and experts believe they belong to the non-poisonous Oyster mushroom group, found in supermarkets.

Mr Tomlinson said: "I was travelling back from work and I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

"I often travel on the bus with my children Katie-Anne, who's 20-months-old, and Ian, who's five.

"If they'd been there they could have touched them, and mushrooms can cause disease or even poison people.Even if it's not poisonous, what does this say about the cleaners? I pay £54.90 per month in fares, which is a lot to be travelling home on transport with mushrooms growing out of it."

A fungi expert said the mushrooms were probably in the non-poisonous pleurotus group but could have been growing on the bus for up to a week.

Disgusting...
The passenger and this report, that is.  The alleged Pleurotus sp. are quite alright.

If I read the article correctly, the mushrooms were actually growing IN the bus, not at the bus stop.

I don't think you read the article. It was ON the bus.

I agree that the article is very mycophobic, but I can understand the cleanliness concerns involved. If the bus can support fungus, then it was likely moist and not cleaned as well as it should have been.

If oysters can grow then black death mold probably can as well.

I wish the pic the dude took was actually on the internet, and not just a picture of his picture on his computer...

I want to see the fruit bodies. I personally would be ecstatic to find mushrooms on a Metro bus, but can understand why people may be concerned.

Seems like many people think of fungi as more like bacteria than plants.  It's interesting.

They are closer to an animal than a plant, I think.

like Twiztidsage said, Him taking a picture of himself with the picture of mushrooms upsets me. I think that image is a good way of summing up the bus drivers character.

It is recommended that oyster mushrooms should not be grown in living spaces because some people can be allergic to the spores!
Mycophobia is an interesting affliction that I think is brought on by misinformation and misunderstanding, I remember playing with mushrooms when I was very young and from memory and my great interest in mycology I now know I was playing with Panaeolina foenisecii.
inski.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

There are so many buses in northern Europe containing damp chipboard, it's surprising we don't see more of this kind of thing. If I'd found them, I'd have taken them home for my dinner. But then I ride a pushbike, so it's a bit unlikely.
