In need of expert reassurance.
    #1133858 - 12/11/02 10:20 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

This is my second time cultivating.  There is no way any of this would be possible without the experience of everyone in this forum.  The end of the month is coming up fast, and I wanted to get as many expert opinions on whether I should chill or lose sleep.

Here's my situation:  I colonized 16 jars, 8 with regular 'ol PF and 8 with PF Hawaiian.  They colonized in 20 days.  Then I cased (2+ jars to each casing) using top-bottom verm.

4-5 days later most of them had SMALL patchy growth, which I patched.  7 days from birthing it seemed like the mycelium was just about to bust through the top verm layer evenly on most of the casings, so I put them in the fridge for 24h.  Now they're the terrarium (76-78F, 95% RH, 12/12 light/dark).

Most of the casings look the same.  There are 2-3 small patchy areas showing through the verm. Here are my questions:

:confused:Do I need to patch these once they've come of out of the fridge?
:confused:Are these areas that show the only places that pins will form?

(I read I was supposed to cold shock them BEFORE the mycelium was all the way through the verm layer to avoid overlay.)

Okay. Of the 6 containers, only one was cold shocked for 24h. The other 5 were only in the fridge for about 10h or so.

I took them all out of the fridge, put them back into the terrarium, pumped the temp back to 82-84F with 95% RH (no air exchanges).

Is this going to help?

Oh yeah, do I need to patch what I already see? The patches are small (1-2cm) and about 4-5 per case. It seems like the rest of the mycelium is just under the surface.

In reply to:

50/50 casing, half verm, half soil

just a note: hawk's 50/50 is verm and peat, not verm and soil.

since soil constituents can vary greatly, it may be better to suggest peat. imagine someone reading "soil" and going out back to dig up some red clay soil from their back yard. plus many off-the-shelf soils can contain fungicides (!!!) and/or fertilizers and/or other materials that may not be good for mushrooms. if you stick to plain peat, that's what you get: plain peat. imho.

The set up right now is a large, rubbermaid container (blue tinted plastic gives a futuristic feel). Next to that is an electric baseboard heater set to low. There's an adjustable dial. The whole set up is in a closet, so the temperature is kept steady.

Thanks for the reassurance about the casing. It's important that they go as well as possible. I took the casings out of the fridge and put the whole thing in the terrarium. Temp 84-87F, 95% RH, no light in the closet. I'm sure the CO2 is building up in the terrarium, so I don't plan on covering them with tin foil.

So my question is about overlay. Right now there are plenty of patchy areas developing over the surface of the casing. Do I wait until the entire surface is white with mycelium before I initiate pinning? This whole initiating pinning thing is mysterious to me.

In my experience what you have right now is perfect, I would just place these casings into the terrarium in the lower 70's with the RH in the 92% range and wait.

The patches will fill in, not to worry. But make sure that you are keeping up on you air exchanges though, the only time that we got bad contams (green and cobweb) was when we didn't exchange the air very often.

I think that the cold shocking was a good idea, because sometimes that is the only way that I have gotten some casings to pin. I don't think that you will have to worry about overlay because that is something that happens when the entire surface is totally covered, oh and you don't need to patch those patches!

Good Luck
Dave

go low 70's next time invest in some peat, straight verm for a casing layer never worked really well for me, it always tended to dry out, not as much as coir though but decieving to the eye.

I'm initiating pinning now.  The mycelium is uniform on all the casings.  I'm going to drive the temp/RH down and I have fish pumps pushing air into the terrarium every 6h.

Hopefully everything will go well.  I think I saw little hyphal knots on one casing.  I am glad that everyone responded to this post.  If I waited another day or two I would have probably had overlay.  Damn, if I just had a camera this would be much easier.

Wish me luck

I think they're fine. Temp is now 78, RH a little too low (60-78%). How do I recognize overlay if it happens?
