agar dishes?
    #11365768 - 11/01/09 09:39 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So i work at a pizza place and we have sauce cups kind of like this

i was thinking that instead of wasting my money on petri dishes i could use these for my agar work.....now my only question is, is that do i need to put a hole in the lid for gas exchange or do you think it'll be fine sealed?

What type of plastic is it made from ?  Cause it needs to be sterilized before pouring agar into it.  Also I would put a small hole in the lid and then put a piece of micropore tape over it.

they will melt at or before the boiling point of water (212F)

they can not be sterilized.

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

I would not use that for sterilization, it will melt.  Plastic petri dishes are really cheap and reusable.

those are solo brand plastic ramekins
looks like 2oz to me but
if you use them from a new unopened package
they should be fine

they are made by injecting hot liquid plastic
into a mold therefore they should be sterile
from the manufacturer

Once upon a time the breakfast crew made some sugar pops and poured boiling sugar water into those cups.  5 minutes later and the plastic warped causing contents to leak out everywhere.

agreed they dont stand up to heat very well
but when pouring agar it should not be hot anyway

I'm def going to put a hole with micro pore tape in the lid now, i was just debating whether its worth it or not because i didn't know if agar needs gas exchange or if it was fine sealed....and these came in a 200 count sleeve w/ lids in separate sleeve also that i got a five finger discount on....but otherwise I'm sure their only a couple bucks for each sleeve.  oh and i used alcohol to sterilize these cause i knew these would melt with experience of using them
