Dropped cake on floor- help!
    #11365248 - 11/01/09 10:22 PM (8 years, 19 days ago)

Didn't see anything about this one in the search function...

I made a really stupid mistake. I have my FC in my bedroom with 2 cakes in it. Instead of moving the chamber into the kitchen to add 2 more recently colonized cakes, I decided to take them out of the 24 hour dunk, roll them in vermiculite, put them on a square of tin foil and transfer them via clean plate to my bedroom. The first cake transferred no problem, but while I was lifting the second cake- carefully by the corners of the foil, predictably, it dropped. On the carpet. I picked it up and rushed it back to the kitchen and rinsed the hell out of it. All the vermiculite came off. I rinsed it under a steady stream of water for awhile and re-rolled.

I carefully put it back in the FC, and for now it is on the other side of the box, away from the others. What are my options? I think any floor cruft would have stuck only to the verm, but I am familiar with sterile technique and contaminates. My floor isn't clean and although the verm was dry, the cake underneath was wet and contaminates just looove a wet surface. Thoughts?

I had one before drop on the ground and it was fine. Once there fully colonized there pretty contam resistant. You can just grab the cake directly no need to lift it by the foil its on

Yeah 100% colonized cakes are resistant, you may get a bit of bruising but its nothing. Good luck with your cakes.

Ok good. Thanks guys.

It's my first time so I'm extra paranoid and being really careful, especially since this started out as someone else's project- I don't want the other party to check on the progress and find out that I killed them.

dude if they're fully colonized i think shitting on them is about the only thing you can do to contaminate them,
you'll be fine.

maybe separate the dropped cake from the rest and re roll, and fruit it separately?
edit: see above :P

not necessary.. as soon as a cake is birthed it is exposed to airborne contaminates. what do u think is happening while you are fanning? you are sending thousands of spores floating around right at ur cakes.. if ur cake is 100% you dont need to worry about contams until the cake is spent at which point the myc is weak and can be taken over by mold.. this is when u will toss it out after a few flushes.

That was kinda my thought on the matter, but the addition of the carpet is what made me nervous. I've moved the cake back up close to the others so we'll see how it goes.
