Substrate is always drying out during pasteurization
    #11364486 - 11/01/09 06:32 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i follow large_doses tek. I use 1 brick coir, 1 qrt coffee, 1 qrt verm, and i add 1 qrt gypsum. then a little over 1 gallon of water.

i've only done this twice but both times i wake up in the morning to dry substrate. there is absolutely no water when i squeeze the sub, so i've had to add water in the morning.

i dont know if im pasteurizing to long, or if the heat gets too high, or if i just need to add more water from the get go.

anyone else ever have this problem?

You used a full gallon of water per brick? did you cut the heat at 170 F? personally I would cut it at 140.

Sorry if that question sounds patronizing.  Not at all how it's intended.

But something else springs to mind.  In the tek he says sub is ready in 6 hours.  How long are you letting it cool off for?

How big is the coir block you use?

I'm not sure, it says it expands to nearly 9 liters of bedding material.

I have used this kind before:

and it is def bigger than a "regular"
block. I use 1 1/2 gallon of water with it.

I don't think it is a matter of time. If you have the lid on the bucket there should be no moisture escaping. I have a half a brick of coir sitting in my bucket, still moist a week later....

Sorry, just saw your last post. Most bricks are usually 7-8 quarts expanded. Yours does 9 so will need a little more water.

The package should tell you how much water to add.

ya, it says add 3-4 liters of H2O. Thats about a gallon, right?

But if you consider all of my other ingredients, (especially the verm) i would probly need to add more water from the get go.

Yeah, I hydrate the verm separately, then add to hydrated coir to pasteurize.
