First PE trays looking a little strange... mutants?
    #11262541 - 10/16/09 08:57 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

What do all of you think about these pictures?  There are three trays, two with modest sized pinsets and then this one with the best pinset but all these strange bulges that are like larger than golf balls, one appears to have a sort of sideways/upside down cap and you might be able to see the gills in one of the pics.  I guess these are the 'monkey nuts' that everyone is talking about but these are huge.  The tray that has the mutants was late cased, thought you all might like to know.  Do we just pull these right off, how careful do you have to be to not damage the mycelial network?

You need to remove the fruitbodies or they will start to rot.

Grab them by the base and twist them to limit the amount of substrate and casing material that comes up with them.

PM me and I'll send you a swab of some good PE genetics.

Yeah, I always get mutated first flushes of PE and they are always the very strongest by weight, unless I eat like 1.75 grams of tiny aborts and pins.

Now the mutants kinda annoy me.  They seem to grow very slowly *for me* compared to normal fruit bodies.

Jack always get mutant PE blobs on first flush, even after cloning a non mutant fruit.  Remove them as you would any other fruit, grab at the base, and gently twist and pull.  Never heard them referred to as "Monkey Nuts" before though lol

Is the strong bluing and resemblance to 'brain coral' on the tops of some indicatave of the beginning of rot?
PS  Thank you for the offer, your generosity makes me feel very welcomed

Hawks Eye order of a bunch of syringes about 2 years ago, the leftover syringes ended up in my possession after a few failed attempts from the purchaser, so the spores are indeed quite old ;-)

Also thought I should add for the sake of scientific inquiry that they were grown in pasteurized hpoo which was mixed fairly close to 1:1 with verm, and added about 5% gypsum by weight, the casing was 50/50+ and that particular tray was the only one with mutants, and the only one that was late cased... it is also the only one that is doing reasonably well as the other trays have some fruits about the same size as you can see here down further on the tray, but only very few with most of them actually growing out from the sides, so I kind of feel like the casing has inhibited the growth on these and I need to re-examine my casing technique carefully.  (I will try to post some pictures if I can)

See now that is strange because these grew EXTREMELY fast, getting to the size of golfballs before the rest of the pins had even broken the casing layer.

Thanks for the replies guys

EDIT:  Here are the pics... kinda lame I know, I feel like the pins got buried under the casing, any ideas?  Also, I picked that bottom left one from the mutant tray... 90.5g wet lol and almost the size of my hand
