Coroner reports that taser shocks contributed to suspects death....[CA]
    #11363126 - 11/01/09 04:38 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Nov. 1st 2009 - My Valley News

RIVERSIDE - For the first time, a Riverside County coroner's investigator ruled that Taser shocks contributed to a suspect's death, it was reported today.

Marlon Acevedo, 35, was high on PCP and had an enlarged heart when he was shocked, and the Taser jolts and the struggle with police were cited as factors in his death a year ago on Halloween, the Press-Enterprise reported.

He was outside his house on Cypress Avenue, screaming at passing cars that he wanted to die, and officers struck him with batons and shocked him several times, according to the coroner's report. He died at a hospital less than an hour later.

PCP intoxication was listed as the primary cause of death, but an enlarged heart, Taser shocks and the physical confrontation were also cited.

"Absent the use of the Taser, he most likely still would have died. I don't think this is a reason to demonize the use of the Taser," Dr. Scott McCormick, who did the autopsy on Acevedo, told the Press-Enterprise.

Tasers are widely used by police, though critics say the high-voltage, low-amperage jolts can lead to fatal heart problems, and that people who are mentally impaired or who are on drugs are at a higher risk of dying, especially when receiving multiple or prolonged shocks.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based maker defends their use as a less-than-lethal alternative for subduing combative people.

A few other coroners around the country have, on occasion, listed Tasers as a contributor to a detainee's death, but it was a first in Riverside County.

Police declined to comment on the ruling.

Acevedo's family has sued the county in federal court, alleging wrongful death and excessive force.

Two other people died in Riverside County in July and August after encounters with sheriff's deputies near Hemet and in Moreno Valley. Authorities said the men behaved as if they had mental problems or were under the influence of drugs. The causes of death have not been released.

According to the coroner's report, Acevedo had numerous blunt-impact injuries to his limbs, head, face and abdomen. A Taser barb was still embedded in the upper-left part of his abdomen and there were three other puncture wounds that appeared to be from Taser barbs.

Toxicology tests showed evidence of PCP and marijuana use, and Acevedo had a history of heroin use, the report said.

See this is how come im against a taser.  Gung ho muthaFin pigs wanna use them to often.  So they get tased 1 time and there allowed to use them.  They use them for everything including a 89 yr old women.  What the hell is going on.  Police are bigger thugs than hardened criminals.  I personally feel like how can you send an electrical shock through someone when u have no idea whats wrong w/ them.

Tasers probably save more cops than they do kill criminals.
