    #11362326 - 11/01/09 12:11 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i dont know if this is normal or not, but my last batch looked the same and never did anything more. there is a milky white ring around the bottom. im just trying to avoid another failed run. they were inoculated 4 days ago and are in 1/2 pt jars.

Doesn't look great.
What did you shoot in there? How much?
What kind of jars? (Looks like PF, but...) How did you prepare them?

Yeah... Could be contaminated but you have to wait few more days. Did you use a glove box? (Follow Doc_Ts tips).

its BRF,verm, water mix, i did use a glovebox, and i put about 1/2 cc per jar. Isnt the jar supposed to be fuzzy almost? this is more of a pasty white substance on the bottom...

It's hard to tell from that photo but it sounds like it may be too wet.

Did you use the same syringe you used on the last batch you mentioned?

When I used tall half pints it has happened. Or at times when I didn't mix the BRF well. After I take them out of the PC they look like that. Or it could be it got to hot on the bottom of the jar when PC'ing maybe .

IMO here is your possible game plan:
Don't open it.
Wait a few more days.
Post another pic for diagnosis to see how it's changed.
Re-evaluate once there.

That looks normal. I just starting doing this recently too and had most my jars like that "at the bottom". It's just moisture don't worry about it. And it takes like 4-7 days to start seeing a greyish color spawn growing especially if you used the needle to inoculate. So, be patient and you'll begin to see it colonize. I was like "WTF" to when I didn't see anything after 4 days too, but make sure you have them @ around 80 degrees if you want them to grow faster.
Also, the moisture spots on the bottom of the jars are going to slow down the growing by a lot. I'm having this problem now as the jars are almost finished colonizing 100%. It's been 2 weeks and I'm still waiting. I recently made a mini fridge heater though and hopefully it will speed things up. I've been thinking to use a little LESS water next time I make BRF jars, you might need to consider the same. I'm not sure if it will help though since we do cook them using steam!

adding heat does not speed up colonization. that is outdated information. if your cakes are stalling and its been two weeks then there is a good chance you have bacteria or some other contam in your jars. it will sometimes still finish colonizing but that doesnt mean it isnt contaminated.
