Psilocybe pseudocyanea??
    #11362554 - 11/01/09 02:58 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

This beautifull mushroom caught my attention yesterday. I think it's a Psilocybe caerulea. What do you guys think??

Habitat:
A grassy path at the side of woodland. Didn't have a camera with me to take a pic of the habitat.
There was only 1 solitary specimen of this mushroom found.

Gills:
Gills are dark brown. Attachement is adnate  I guess (not really familiar with these expert terms :smirk: )

Stem:
Stem is about 8 cm long, 4-5mm thick. Slightly enlarged near the base. Lots of bluiish green to azure coloring. No annulus. Hollow at the upper part. White mycelium attached at the base.

Cap:
Cap is about 4cm in diameter. It clearly has a separable gellatinous pellicle. Sticky when moist. Color is strawlike yellow with blue and greenish areas. A pronounced nipple is also present.

Spore print color:
Dark brown

Bruising:
There's lots of blue, but it seems it doesn't really increase when squized or abused.
Would you eat it?

Brown spore print? A little scary.

And for some reason your poll won't let me vote...

Wait for a TI to give confirmation.

I'm not planning to eat it, just wondering what most of you would do...
If most of you think it's an active, I'll probably do an attempt at cultivating it.

Throw it in my mushroom graveyard, under a hedge in my yard.

Unless you get a black spore print or a positive ID from a Trusted Identifier, don't eat it.

I never said it wasn't a Psilocybe, but most don't have brown spores. Maybe brownish-purple or purplish brown, but not usually dark brown. I am not even sure what to call the color in the spore print picture myself.

I think it is a psilocybe personally, I just thought the spore print was worth thinking twice about.

At least they certainly aren't rusty brown, thats for sure.

You may have a psilocybe there, let's see what the TI's say, as I am no expert.

Cool Mushroom nonetheless. :headbanger:

Then either

a: you didn't have Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata
or
b: your spore print was purple-brown.

it does not have to have that color one to be an active psilocybe... thats just usually the case

So you're claiming that you had a confirmed Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata that had a rusty brown spore print?

We better recall all those books, magazines, and web pages that keep telling us that is has to be Purple/Brown or Purple/Black.

Not trying to pick an argument.. I'm sure what you had was the real deal   I'm just concerned because there are a few mushrooms out there that look very similar to Psilocybes, but have a rusty spore print, and are deadly.  I wouldn't want newbs to get the idea that it's OK to eat something like that.

For example:

That may be a large P. Strictipes. It shows bluing at the base of the stem and it has a separate peel-able pellicle and was found in Europe where they are finding allot of them.

As far as the spore print it may have looked dark brown in the lighting and I have had many Ovoids that have given a dark brown spore print and some that are more purple brown.

I'll be very surprised if this turns out to be a P. Strictipes. Doesn't look like the pictures I've seen of strictipes, especially that much of blue and greenish coloring on the cap itself and the lack of the translucent-striate margins and the cap isn't really very smooth...
