What about the rye grain "spawn" which is layered with straw in ShroomGod's Straw Tek? The myce grows all over the straw, multiplying and growing from each grain kernel apparently using more food that the grain alone would contain.

And how about in the field. The spores start in the warm, moist, dark belly of the cow, then expands exponentially after being dumped on the ground where it enters an aerobic phase. It seems like it "eats" the leftover nutrients in the cow pie.

Or the forest: the wood-loving species decompose and consume the log or whatever they are growing in.

Just some examples for discussion.. where's a mycologist when you need one?
