No luck with monotubs
    #11361914 - 11/01/09 12:51 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

So ive been trying to do a bulk grow.. Heres with what. Straw, coir, worm castings, a lil spent coffee grounds, and adding brf cakes. First in the tub i mix the straw and coir with water and get it nice and wet, then squeeze the water out of it until its a field capacity  (still able to squeeze some water out) then add a handful of worm castings, and some spent coffee grounds. Chuck all this shit in an oven bag and cook er at 170f for 2 hrs. When this is cooled i dump it into a wiped out with rub alcohol garbage bag, add the very crushed up cakes and mix that shhit real good, then lay it back in the tub (still in the bag of course) and let it sit for 10 days. These things have repeatedly not colonized, or just colonized a little, and they start to smell foul after about three days, i've taken every possible action to provide a sterile operation but it seems regardless of what i do these things will not colonize. Any thoughts would be appreciated.. Thx

weird, sounds like your pasteurization technique isnt working, but if all your substrate is at 160-170 for 2 hours it should be good... are you mixing your substrate with your spawn while the substrate is still hot cause that could kill the myc:shrug:

for pasteurization i use a big metal bucket with a lid and a small hole in it for a meat thermometer, and put my brick of coir, coffee, gypsum, etc in it.  then i boil about a gallon of water and dump it in there, put the lid on and the thermometer in.  works every time

and it appears as if your doing everything right.

perhaps try something else and then go back to bulk?

maybe you should try rye or WBS as spawn, and keep the spawn:bulk ratio pretty high so it colonizes quick

load all your substrate into a pillow case, submerge, pasteurize for at least 1 hour. then drip dry your sub until the next day that will get it to field capacity and drop the temp.
that's what i have been doing for years

^This.

Leave it in the sink over night, flip it over a couple of times and push on it if you feel the urge.

Smell means bacteria. Bacteria almost never becomes a problem unless there is too much moisture involved.

Bad smell after 3 days sounds like you're getting hit with a bacterial infection.

Monotubs are awesome ... so I would recommend staying with it until you figure it out.

Maybe forget about the straw for a while .... and do a simple bulk substrate of coir and vermiculite with some gypsum.  Easy to prepare and contam. resistant.

as shasha recommends: Use a high spawn ratio of grain spawn for fast, complete colonization.

Good luck.

different strokes

hanging it would eliminate the need to flip it a couple of times. Although the lady might get mad if she has to shower while poo water drips on her head:grin:

Cooking in the oven like that won't achieve pasteurization temps in the center of your bag.

An easier, more reliable method would be something like this:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7953949/an/0/page/0

I use that recipe with a few extra ingredients.

have to disagree i always pasteurize in the oven using oven bags and my temps always reach temp which i know because of the thermometer stuck in the center...

I have to say, the directions in that link seem faulty if not flat out dangerous. Example: "turn off stove, remove PC lid"

I think you misunderstand.  You don't let pressure build up, you just cover it with a lid.

You can use a pot of water /w a lid or a PC.

My bad. Never heard of a Pressure Cooker (PC) that was able to have the lid removed right after being brought to a certain PSI. I usually let my PC decompress slowly for safety reasons and also to avoid sucking the moisture out of my spawn bags.

Definitely ditch your oven pasteurization. I've gotten it to work before with cow manure, but air is a poor conductor of heat. Water works far better.

I've successfully pasteurized small amounts of horse poo in a dehydrator a couple time.  It's a pain in the ass though, unless you just want to do a little bit of bulk sub.

Coir in a pot of water is definitely the easiest method I've tried.

Agree I have always used coir and just pasteurize it using large doses coir tek, and it has never let me down yet.
