possible incubator for jars?
    #11361766 - 11/01/09 12:08 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

i found a site online where you can buy a mini fridge that is also a warmer.
with adjustable temperature knobs and LED temperature display.

i was wondering if i could set this thing at like 81 and put my jars in it to colonize?

Most members here will say you probably don't need an incubator, and I'm one of them

If you do need or want one, I suspect you are better off making your own than buying one. But I could be wrong.
First question- does it have a setting for the temp range you want?
Second, how many jars does it hold?
Third... cost?

it has a 20L capacity
yes the temperature adjusts from cold all the way to 140 and its 99.99

i would post a link but i know this site is a sponser.

i dont plan on using an incubator yet at all.
i was just wondering if it would be suitable for one

Sounds good to me if you want to spend the money. It acts as a dual purpose too so thats good if down the road you find you need a small fridge instead of an incubator.

Can you PM me the link to it?

Don't waist your time or your money. An incubator is completely unnecessary. It will up your contam rate. I tried it and I do much better without.

Not many I would think.

The one mistake I made with mine is I built it too small.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe 6 quarts.
It'd be nice to have something like this for agar dishes, though.

i used an incubator and only 5 out of 83 jars became contaminated. all green mold. probably not PCd long enough.

the other half of the jars didnt do anything because i PCd them too long and dried the cakes up.

i made my own incubator of course. i found some better tubs at menards id like to pick up. theyre way bigger and sturdier. i cant incubate at room temp. the place the grow is going on at is too cold for the jars to just sit out, or even in a box above the fridge :frown:

oh well though. i have a cool incubator

I made a tub in tub incubator my 1st grow. I took it apart, RR said room temp is fine. If ur wearing a tee shirt & are not cold, the cube myc is warm enough.

Waste of time, I've been there with the whole "I need an incubator." It's not necessary and there is nothing wrong with room temperature.

Bacteria thrives in warmer temperatures, I don't see a positive outcome of having an incubator unless you live in an igloo.

Even people who live in houses have different ideas of comfort, and different heating budgets.
Some people are better off with an incubator- but temps still should be around 75, IMO.

And many people do! well not igloos but the comfortable room temp for many people is not enough. My room is far too cold to support growth.

Whichever method you use for incubation, please keep in mind of thermogenesis in a three dimensional space such as jars.

Mycelium will generate heat while colonizing, if ambient temp is at 81F, the temp of jars will most likely be hotter as glass is a good insulator.

Hence why alot of members don't recommend the use of incubators. But if you had to, use a broken fridge with a ceramic reptile heater or triple foil wrapped light bulb, I'd start with a 15W bulb.

Make sure you monitor the temp, as you put more jars in, the less heat it needs to sustain the same temp, which will cause your incubator to rise in temperature.

Why even wrap the bulb? Keeping jars in the dark has been shown to be unnecessary.

Here's my state of the art incubator.

I like to call it a shelf :-D

Long as temps are 65-75 I'm happy.

Sitting around `68f right now and everything is colonizing just fine.
