PF cakes will last a long time in the fridge
    #11361681 - 11/01/09 11:42 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Just wanted to update the community about an accidental discovery of mine.  I had a bunch of jars colonize quickly, and my fruiting chamber was still in use from the last grow round.

I kept the cakes in the jars, put them in a large ziploc bag, and stored them in the fridge.  I then forgot about them for the next 7-8 WEEKS.  I then rehydrated them overnight by soaking in cold water, then crumbled and cased them (50/50+ casing).

I got good results, with first-flush yields comparable to freshly cased substrate and no contams.  Later flushes were pretty weak.

So if you find yourself with colonized substrate and nowhere to fruit them, or if your living situation precludes you from being able to fruit your cakes, store them cleanly in the fridge and they should last at least a month, if not more.

Keywords: shelf life, store, storage, cakes

no need to COLD soak the cakes, thats completely debunked practice. just soak at room temps.

glad you had good results.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

He wasn't cold shocking them for the sake of cold shocking. He was using it to store them.

Also, cold would slow down the metabolism of the myc. It's the same reason why some people use fridge or coolers for agar work and culture slants. Other people are mortified of the amount of contams already in the fridge and stay away from it all together...

 Good to hear about your experience though BrownThumb!

I soaked them in water just for rehydration purposes (Dunk Tek)...
