I dunno. Nothing that's cheaper than perlite, I don't think.

cost all the same perlite, geolite, lava rock but perlite performs the best due to the most surface area for moisture to do its thing.:stoned:

I disagree with the above.

My shotgun FC chamber with 5 inches of moist perlite couldnt maintain humidity with even just 4 holes in the FC!

Soon as I converted the FC to a PmP with geolite and two air stones with a few inches of water I shot right to 99% humidity and now have insane flushes.

thats because you didnt make it like its designed to be made.

you need 1/4" holes every 2 inches on all 6 sides.

fewer holes hinder humidity in a shotgun because it needs the air moving through the perlite to wick the moisture into the air in the chamber.  fewer holes restricts FAE thus the water isnt evaporating and giving you poor performance. :stoned:

if you stray from the tek/design dont expect the same results.

You can use moistened paper towels for humidity in those pop-bottle terrariums.  Just put something between the cake and the paper towel.  It will not contaminate.  Just put fresh paper towels in there every week or so.  It works--try it if you do not believe me.
