The ego is a basic part of the personality structure. It helps us navigate reality as individual entities. Because of our cultural programming IMO most or all of us are neurotic to some degree. This is what I call an unhealthy or unskillful ego structure. This then is the problem. The question for humanity is, can we collectively overcome this and create healthy ego structures. For the individual it's entirely possible IMO. At least to vastly better the ego functioning. Nobodies going to become perfect. Material life doesn't work that way. But one can become much happier and healthier IMO.

Well, people talk about losing their ego, but it can be said that the ego never really goes away, because there is always a point of view 'I'.

And then we can think about the structure of the ego, and how it can actually be concieved by ourselves. Why do people say their ego is dead? It is not like you hear people talking about how lively their ego is on a given day? It seems that there is some, or total loss of definition to the concept and experience of a 'self', even though the self must always be there, in principle, to have the experience.

Now, if the ego was in fact expanding and incorporating more things, then our concept of self seem to dissapear because all of the senses, rather than being defined as seperate 'things' from the self, become merely all there is. It is not like, when you get rid of externality, you end up with internality. If you get rid of externality then you get rid of internality as well - you are merely left with 'everything'.

If you focus on 'I' intently & relentlessly enough, then it thins out into a pure space & silence
This is my experience & the experience of Ramana Maharshi
(who suggested the technique of Self inquiry 'who am I?' as the only true/final method of 'Self relization' or enlightenment)

Focusing on what 'I' is, inevitably destroys the ego, or the ideas which make up 'ego'
Really ego is just ideas we have about ourself, a shape shifting self image
I suppose egoloss is to stop shifting shapes & to be shapeless
To stop projecting images of self & be imageless

Your ego is vastly more than an idea. It controls your thoughts.  It controls your actions. Can't get any more powerful than that.  It is a hard struggle one must accomplish, to overcome the influence of the ego.  It is a struggle to maintain control of the ego. The ego is a very devious adversary, that wants to restrict all functions of the mind that don't support the ego.  You must control the ego, not use it. :peace:

ego is a part of the personality structure. It is a navigational tool for an individual entity. This world would make little sense without one. If the ego dies the person dies. Ego death is a myth. And you can't "override" your ego. Your ego structure is either healthy/unhealthy or skillful/unskillful or like for most of us something of both.

Yeah I WANT to believe the buddhists, but I just can't imagine being able to function without an ego. What might an egoless person behave like? How would he be able to have a conversation without associating with either of the participants?

I contend that buddhism outside it's core teachings from the buddha is a religion. Much of it, like with christianity, was the willingness to adopt and include local beliefs go get the population to adopt the buddhist religion.

At core IMO the buddha taught a workable psychological technique.

At the very core would be the four noble truths:

- life is suffering
- suffering is caused by attachments and desires
- there is a way out of suffering (nirvana)
- the way out of suffering is following the eightfold noble path

While a lot can be narrowed down to psychological tools, the very core of Buddhism remains a very spiritual system of liberation. Rebirth, karma, different realms of existence - these were all included in the earliest of Buddha's teachings. When you compare it to other eastern religions - hinduism and jainism particularly - the very same concepts of rebirth, karma, and ultimate liberation (nirvana or moksha) all hold true.

A lot of rationalists in the West who are picking up Buddhism are trying to assert that it's a purely psychological system - and in doing so they ignore some of the most powerful teachings - and the entire purpose of the path - liberation from continuous birth and death, and the attainment of a deathless blissful state. :sun:

I'll buy that life has suffering and that suffering is generally caused by attachment to desire, but I see very little evidence in favor of reincarnation, which sounds like a manifestation of death anxiety.  The attainment of a deathless blissful state also sounds like a carrot employed by Buddhists to induce people to believe in their religion.

It's true that different sects of Buddhism were flavoured by the cultures they spread to - like Bon in Tibet and like Taoism in China (Ch'an which became Zen when it hit Japan).

But the relative amount of Bon influence on Tibetan Buddhism is minor - one example I can think of are Tibetan prayer flags (which were a Bon tradition) - but these things were more cultural than core aspects of the Buddhist practice. And when Buddhism hit Tibet, a lot of Bon practices were altered to become more Buddhist - further blurring the line.

But the real method to compare is to look at the main goal of the two practices. In Tibetan Buddhism, in keeping with other Mahayana Buddhist sects, the main goal is to reach Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings - that is the main goal is the complete enlightenment of all minds. Bon, being a shamanic practice, was more concerned with securing worldly results and spirit worship/contact - two things that Buddhism avoids. The lamas of Tibetan Buddhism did in some ways take over some roles that Bon priests were previously filling for the community - i.e. divination practices - but again this was more cultural than it was a core tenet of their form of Buddhism.

"we" don't reincarnate... everything we know as ourselves dies with the body

in Buddhism, the term rebirth is preferred over reincarnation, as reincarnation often implied the same eternal soul (atman) re-inhabiting new bodies - whereas buddhism taught that there was no eternal soul and that the very subtle mind which reincarnates is constantly changing life after life (which is why rebirth in a different realm as a different class of being is possible).

the very subtle mind which experiences rebirth is the storehouse of karmic imprints which then come into fruition in future moments and future lives. an analogy is that death is like arriving at an airport with a suitcase of karma, shipping it to a random location - but not getting on the plane. A new being at the destination gets the suitcase and continues on the mental continuum's progression or regression.

it could also be said to be like having a series of dreams wherein in each dream you are unaware of the preceeding dreams - and you may have dreamt yourself as totally different dream characters (i.e. a butterfly). The most subtle mind awareness which experienced all of these dreams in succession is that which experiences rebirth after death.

when one reaches enlightenment - they remember all of their preceding lifetimes in a single moment - from which such tales as the 500 lifetimes of Siddhartha Gautama prior to his Buddhahood were recorded. there's some evidence of rebirth if you're willing to accept it, such as the methods by which reincarnated tulkus (Tibetan lineages) such as the Dalai Lama were located (where the incarnate candidate is tested by having to sort out which objects presented to him/her were theirs in the previous life). While there's no "scientific evidence" of rebirth - it also begs the question of what scientific evidence of it would look like. There are many stories of children remembering and recounting details of their previous life that were later confirmed.

All religions are mired in superstition and myth. What is important are the lessons the stories teach, not the stories. The problem with Eastern Religions is that no matter what they preach, they all adhere to an oppressive class system.  A diverse and contextual understanding of all religions, is a healthier situation. As far as reincarnation is concerned, I haven't seen proof one way or the other.  :peace:

I don't like it when bad things happen to anyone.
I have no problem with my ego. My feelings on the other hand is another issue.

Energy takes on different forms too. Maybe life = energy?

What? All i said was that, to me at least, it seams that it is life that is reincarnating, only its forms change. Icelander called it energy and you spirit. I'm ok with that. But do you agree that only the forms change?

on what do you base the fact that the life being constantly born is not just NEW life; why call it re-birth?

No, because to me, life/spirit/whatever, holds no more importance over form. That kind of discrimination is, in essence, a perpetual denial of Nature, a sort of...transcendental beyond, which in actuality should be called mystery.
For some reason, humanity hasnt been able to grasp that. Probably because of a little thing called faith.

Well, the life force remains the same. In two beings the life force is the same. They either have it and live or they don't and are dead. I can't distinguish between one life force in one being and another. It is always life and it came from life, so it seems there is only one life force just like there is only one death.

You really think this was true in Tibet? The buddhist there when they ate meat had hindus kill it so they wouldn't get the bad karma. The military was of different status also. There was lots of bs from what I've read and I've read a bit.

From the way you put that, it sounds as if you endorse a caste system.  If you just read a book it all sounds fine. Try going to India and other Countries and find out how they actually live, and treat their neighbor. If you read the words of Jesus it sounds great. Go out and watch Christians, and they don't seem to be walking in the same footsteps! It's the same everywhere, every Religion.

I met a guy once who had achieved egolessness. How did he do this you may ask? Well, he shot himself in the head with a 12 gage of course. :suicide:
