White flies
    #11361132 - 11/01/09 08:10 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I Noticed some white flies on my 'Summer Sunrise' Brugmansia this morning and my question is simple. How do I get rid of them without infecting other plants as quickly as possible? I currently have the plant which was gone from seed isolated. My pest experience is mostly dealing with prevention rather then getting rid of them after the fact but any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I reccomend you get some diatomaceous earth and put a few mm of that on the soil; then get 1600 x-clude pyrethrum (or any pyrethrum product) and spray the leaves and stems lightly with that, and rinse it off after 1-2 minutes.

wound that be a pesticide or insecticide? do you know if it is organic? (yeah I'm kind of sort of one of those people who wish not to use pesticides or insecticides)

No, DE dries up the insects outer layer and kills them, perlite just helps drainage. Anyway, I recommend you get neem oil and spray the white flies to hell. It might take a bit to work since neem is more of a preventative, but it's a low risk pesticide that will eradicate them eventually.

No you couldn't.
Diatomaceous earth is a powder.
The 16oo x-clude is organic, it is made from the crysanthemum flower, but it will kill the insects/pests pretty much instantly...
Good luck

thank you for your quick replies. I will just keep the plant away from all others in the meantime. Can those items be picked up at a good garden center or hardware type store (home depot)? I would rather not use neem if I don't have to though it was suggested in a book I have.

Yes. Look for pesticides at home depot that have "pyrethins" in the ingredients, that's basically a generic version of what nite recommended.

I just looked at Google about pyrethrins and I could not narrow it down so is there any care to be taken when using pyrethrum?

safety wise

Do it in an open area, don't breathe it in, don't spray it on anything you don't want to dye.... it'll say everything on the bottle...

Give it some good ventilation if indoors and spray the shit out of your plants, that's about it.

Dont Bug Me Plant Spray

I know some may be worried about spraying their plants with sprays to get bugs off but this is a good spray, also it doesn't hurt your plants or your harvest. Its active ingredient is Pyrethrum, which is derived from chrysanthemum flowers.

Horticultural oil is what I would use before stepping up to pyrethroids. Pyrethrum is a naturally occurring chemical but the ones in insecticidal sprays are synthetic and only mimic the natural ones. They also kill beneficial insects as well as the bad ones.

When you say horticultural oil you mean Neem oil, correct?

More along the lines of White oil, an old-school product but Neem and other newer oils work just as well. For Whitefly I would go for an infused oil with garlic and chilli as a deterrent, diluted in water and applied with a hand sprayer. That way they will just go elsewhere.
