Papaver Somniferum cultivation
    #1115373 - 12/05/02 08:09 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I am planning to grow the magical opium poppy. I live in Montana, where there is a weak drug task force and there is a lot of space. I am going to plant a large secluded garden within a wooded area. My question is about irrigation. Watering the plants will not be easy do to the location. There is a lot of rain in late spring, it rains at least once a week, and it gets significantly dryer by mid-July, will poppies survive off of rain water?

Once they take hold they are relatively hardy i've noticed and will propagate without much work. And often become hard to get rid of if you don't want them anymore.

This post helped me out too...I'm gonna be growin some indoors on flats to be transported outside for optimum groth...

I do have my own questio though...
Can the papaver somniferum plant be "topped" like cannabis to produce more than one or 2 heads? Or a tek I can use to induce groth of more heads?

Good question: I don't know. My first guess is probably not. I will do some research though and get back to you.

I know how to make plants produce two things, I was a Botany major. But with poppies i didn't see how it could really be done unless it was done real early, and in my opinion the plant is too fragile to even do it right.

But I suppose it can be done on a poppy because here is a picture of it

I will try to cultivate some indoors and see if i can produce a plant with two pods. I've never really tried it before but I'm sure it can be done now. My hypothesis is that it has to be done quite early while the plant is a seedling to make it produce two pods. We'll see..

I'm sure someone else around here might be able to answer your question quite easily. I'm looking toward PS, but i haven't seen him post in a while.

Where and when?

You can't top the stalk, you won't get two outta that. You'd have to top it fairly young. so it produce two new shoots with leaves and such.

Montana should be a fine area...... Sow the seeds in early spring after the first thaw.....they need the cooler temps to get started. I put my seeds in the freezer for a couple of days before planting... The seeds can (I have heard ) be thown out in the snow? not sure. I started my first seeds in October and they survived easily through the Texas winter. They are fast growers 5-6 weeks. They need less water after the flowers have dropped their petals, the excess water will dilute the latex in the plant. When they are young don't water too much or you WILL get root rot!!!! Don't top the plants many strains have multiple pods and don't need it. My first time I grew Danish Flaggs and they had at least 6 pods per plant!!! There has been some success with transplanting from the indoors to outside check www.poppies.org, Lots of info! Good Luck !!!

They're very hardy and grow like weeds. The only problem you may have is hiding them when they start spreading everywhere, just make sure no popo come around to see lanced pods. That's bad news.

Here is my poppy patch this year

This is my first time and I really didn't know what I was doing. A 100g packet of poppy seeds was bought from an asian grocery store and the whole thing distributed over about 6 sq. m. of rich soil. They grew real fast and there were so many that they all ended up really tall and weak. I did try to thin them (by the handful) but it didn't seem to have much effect.. oh well. I expect them all to be flowering within a few days. I think I will collect opium from some and leave others intact for pod tea.

ZETA Thats quite inspiring...They do grow hardy then...What soil would they prefer...Ferts?
What kind of sunlight for max yeild...All will be sliced for "research" purposes, so
max yeild would be the main goal, and does quality vary, or are they pretty much uniform?

Oh, yeah, for the topping of poppies, I think it is quite impossible. As said above, you could try when they are young, but on the 10 I tried, 8 died, 1 went dormant ( no growth for nearly a week, and another one is just getting the already existing leaves larger... All the pics with the multiple pods depend on the strain, some of them will have like  up to 5-6 pods, and other only 1.. but there is something to do with luck too, as I had some danish flags that only had 1 pod per plant, and in the middle of the bed, there was one with three tiny pods...
