NOTHING at all like Shpongle - nothing will EVER come close to it, except POSSIBLY Shpongle III or music coming out 5 years from now at least!
BUT: the closest stuff to it:
Juno Reactor (already mentioned above by "aguynameddan") - You'll wanna try the last two albums - "Bible of Dreams" and "Shango"
People on this forum also might not be aware of the two albums which have been labeled even by the ARTISTS as Shpongle-Clones - "Entheogenic - Entheogenic" and "Shulman - Soundscapes and Modern Tales" - if you dig the Shpongles......... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND (this coming from one of the biggest Shpongle fans on EARTH.. I've closely studied every album I've ever obtained.. and these come closest - fitting, because both artists basically say they were trying to get that same vibe-changing[-WOW!]-vibe that Shpongle pulls off so well - wow this is a lot of stuff in parentheses), as they're the closest to Shpongle I've come across so far... and dude thats basically my mission in life lol to find(/create?) stuff this "audibly awesome."
also worthy of honerable mention is Makyo - Yakshini, Celtic Cross - Hicksville, Mystery of the Yeti Part II (TIPWorld Records), and.. oh yeah!! The Fireman - Rushes (its Paul McCartney working with Youth) - an album where an old Beatle genius gets to work with a top electronic producer in the studio with all the new toys (its so different from anything the beatles ever did, yet twice as brilliant) oh man that album kicks some major ass too
I'll be able to recommend some more later.. but those are DEFINITELY the closest I've found so far (I'd heard some of those before Shpongle, and instantly knew which direction the most mature electronic music was going), but I'll keep you posted
Any fan of Shpongle's is a friend of mine mmmm holy shit I'll probably listen to that tonight (FUCK! I let my friend borrow my good headphones!).
Oh and just as a reminder for those who have Shpongle (not mp3... pff go BUY it its 10X as good) but haven't listened to it on mushrooms - ITS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE ON SHROOMS than it is on anything else, or sober for that matter - its MADE for psychedelic intoxication.
-=- Matt/Strumpling -=- lol dammit.... ranting on and on about Shpongle again.. phew I'm probably looking pretty crazy by now eh? If I do.. you haven't tripped to Shpongle yet, have you?

well it might be best to try not to listen to it again until you're tripping - I've found that the longer the break you take from it (or if you're pimp enough to buy the CD and not even listen to it at all until you're tripping.. which is definitely the best way to go..), the more incredible it will be.
-=- Matt/Strumpling -=- hmm actually I guess EVERYTHING's like that..

I totally agree with you. Buying a shpongle cd that i've never heard, and putting it on my cd player as i'm coming up hardcore on mushies was the best tripping experience ever, lol. i insisted people become shpongled, and forced my headfones upon them until they submitted to the power of shpongle

I hate Juno Reactor, don't know why.
Check out Hallucinogen, its one of the artists (Simon Posford) from Shpongle's solo work.
Also, I'd say the trippiest song EVER is Etnica - Trip Tonite. (trip tonight, triptonite, trip tonite, lots of different versions and spellings, but DL them!)

Yeah, Hallucinogen is a great choice. Same main guy. it's more fast, more dance beat (less mellow ones than on the second shpongle) and hallucinogen is just supreme tippy dance out stuff. i would go out of my way very far to catch a party he was at. i also enjoy astral projection alot.

I hate it when people ask what kind of music Shpongle is..... lol its tons of different types of music
Good news: Most of its relatively "chill-out" stuff compared to like Hallucinogen or some of the more "gushing" and "stomping" electronic stuff

Children of the Bong, very trancy mellow with dub style. It is not the same but I would put it in the same category as Shpongle. For some reason they are not making tracks any more.
Check out the song Polyphase I use this to test speakers great highs and lows. Take the CD into Circuit City and blast it.

Yeah it is good in fact a lot of stuff that came from the Planet Dog record label in 1994-1995 is great.
Children of the Bong Banco de Gaia (the new stuff is not that good in my opinion) Eat Static
I am a big fan of Psytrance but I found this stuff before Goa and it was the trippiest electronica I could find in 1994. I like to listen to this, Shpongle, Celtic Cross and what have you because Psytrance gets boring after a while unless you are dancing.

Oh those artists are like Eat Static? Eat Static = same dudes from Ozric Tentacles, another one of my favorite groups - check out Ozric Tentacles - The Hidden Step Its fantastic... not quite Shpongle-Worthy, but cool.
Eat Static - In the Nude is pretty good as well

Ozric Tentacles has never really been my cup of tea I. I have only one album Jurassic Shift and it always seemed kinda new ageish maybe like Yani or John Tesh.
Eat Static is different than Children of the Bong and Banco de Gaia it is all over the place where CofB and BdG are more of a journey like shpongle. Anyway download a song or two and you will see. Check out anything from BdG's two best albums Maya and Last Train to Lhasa.

OZRICS COMPARED TO YANI!!! Pla........ease, I didn't just read that did I!? Even simon posford (the lone deranger!) has to take his hat off to these guys (he actually bigs em up in Are you shpongled? if I remember rightly)
check out some of these ozric albums:
Pongmasters ball (live) Waterfall cities strangeitude become the other erpland pungent effulgunt Jurassic shift
Ed wynne's guitar is furious and blissful. Joie's (or seaweed's, damn it even ed's) synth work = breathtaking Merv's (or rad...or shoo's druming skills are tighter than a...!) Champignon's bag'o'flutes would be sorely missed...Ta khut, baby! Roly's (and don't forget zia ) bass lines always fluid
Oh and Nodens ictus an ozrics offshoot band, beautiful atmospheres, ambient textures and soundscapes...put that korg wavestation to work.

Let me start by saying that I do not think Simon Posford is the end all be all of electronic music. Shpongle is good and Hallucinogen is great, but it is the same for every board like this one I visit, Shpongle this and Shpongle that.
The one album I have of Ozric is Jurassic Shift and it is just not dark enough for my taste, too floaty with no catchy tunes. Maybe under the inluence but I like anything in that state so that is no judge.
Maybe people just all like to agree and say yeah Shpongle and yeah Ozric. The friends of mine that like Ozric also like Phish and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. They sit around getting high agreeing on the same music over and over again, so boring. You want something good try Eric Weissberg's Shuckin' the Corn. All of my good openminded Phish friends look at me like I am crazy when I throw on some good ole' Bluegrass records.
Enjoy the music you like and have fun
Oh, I think Sparkle from Phish is brilliant and is great in a Bluegrass mix.

Who said Simon was the end-all-be-all...... this is a thread about music similar to Shpongle dude. Settle down?
I read in an interview that Simon really digs the Ozrics and the more I listen to them the more I can see which tricks of theirs he ran off with
Somebody had mentioned Nodens Ictus - that album kicks some major ass as well - it sounds pretty old, but the composition is fantastic - not very Shpongle-like though, but I would assume if you like the details of Shpongle you'll like how intricate this album is too.

No I was just replying to the above comment that maybe I should like Ozric because Simon likes Ozric, sorry for the outburst.

well isn't that a reasonable suggestion then? If you dig Shpongle.... then you may dig the Ozrics as well, as they've been a great influence for Simon

Did not sound like a suggestion of anything. Sounded like a question of my sanity, like maybe I should rethink what I just said because Simon is down with them.

Here are some artists/bands that are good while tripping, or ones that would probably be good while tripping.
Boards of Canada (some of the best electronic trip music) Mouse On Mars
Autechre Squarepusher Bj?rk Boredoms (probably best for daytripping in the summer) Philip Glass u-ziq (he actually has a track called Mushroom Compost, which is a really cool song) Sigur Ros Matmos Funkst?rung Richard Devine Amon Tobin Third Eye Foundation Tricky Massive Attack Plaid A Clockwork Orange soundtrack The Residents might be good too, and possibly Renaldo and the Loaf
Tool, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd are all good choices too.
I've only heard 30 second clips of Shpongle, and the songs I heard sounded very cool. They sound kind of like Juno Reactor combined with Boards of Canada, but Shpongle still has a very unique sound.

No need to come in here and talk smack if you don't like Shpongle - they're looking for similar music.... The Beatles are not similar..
THE FIREMAN - RUSHES, however, an album by Paul McCartney in 1998, is somewhat like Shpongle, only way more accessible and quite a bit less detailed.

Ah thanks for the tip never heard of the Firemen. Sounds like good ambient I will have to check out the whole album. I would love to hear what John might have done with electronica!
Wow! This is a collaboration with Youth from Dragonfly. Will be checking this out soon.

Er... For tripping I would recommend you listen to music you naturally enjoy, instead of listening to music that is labeled as 'trippy' while tripping.

Please tell me you've actually listened to Shpongle before you dismiss them as being somehow derivative... listening to their music on DMT is like looking over the Mona Lisa with a compound lens and not only seeing each brush stroke but finding that Da Vinci left little microscopic messages because he knew somebody would do that eventually "Tales of the Inexpressible" is far and away my favorite album of all time, and even sober people say it sounds like music from another planet.
Not saying I only listen to Shpongle, but a trip doesn't feel complete without it. I can set all sorts of moods with other music, but only Shpongle really sounds like it was made for trippers by trippers. It's like a little friendly reminder, for when things are getting weird, that not only have I been here before, but others have as well. And they even bring in Terence McKenna! I swear I could weather the worst trip ever as long as I had his droning voice explaining everything that was going on.

Thank you for your insight jimbotron, I never looked at it that way .
Although I'd still have to go with Bob Dylan.

check out Ott
I really like shpongle, but i was honestly a little disappointed with his live performance, i saw him at rothbury and all he did was push a button every 30 secs and dance around, the visualizer was the real show
