Is this bulk ready to be fruited? *PIC*
    #11357942 - 10/31/09 02:31 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

This is 2 days after spawning 6qt. GT to 24qt. coir/verm/coffee/gypsum in a 15gal monotub.

Thinking of leaving this uncased and introducing fruiting conditions (light & FAE). Is it ready?

Check out the log of this grow and please comment:

Yeah damn, 2 days is so fast, I would be happy with 2 days and wait another 2 or 3, wait for some knots and see if the rest of that brown gets covered in white.

yea can be done like said, but 2 days is a little faast depending on how deeep it is it might not be fully colonized in the middle. did you put a frosting layer of spawn? i know when i do the top is done before the inside

The sub is about 5" deep. Some spawn was mixed into the top layer (1.5" or so) of the substrate but it wasn't set just directly on top. So maybe it should definitely wait a couple of days for fruiting.

i would say so in my experience it never hurts to wait a day or 2 and usually helps in the end

So today is day 5 after spawning... and here is a pic of the sub:

Is the yellow spotting something to be worried about? It doesn't look like pins.

Debated not doing a casing at all - but it seems the results from others on the forums are fewer, large fruits. Would prefer to get more, smaller fruits. Has this been your experience?

doesn't really mater all the same in the end with cubes if conditions are right but if they aren't then i usually case. like the low RH in the winter make for  pain sometimes. but no need to do it now if in the light already

Going to grab a hygrometer tomorrow to keep an eye on humidity, hopefully the conditions are OK for fruiting but want to be sure. If not optimal then the sub will be cased. Thanks for the input!

Damn it why cant I get my sub to colonize like that?  Should I stay away from the 1:4-1:3 ratio?

The substrate in the pic was colonized at 1:4... maybe because there was a slightly higher concentration of spawn in the top layer of the sub.

No I mixed it up even throughout the whole sub.

Here is what happened to my other tub, hopefully this doesnt happen to YOU bro!!!  Goodluck and sorry if I'm hijacking.

I need a new hygrometer, every time it gets up to 90 percent it shuts off like its getting too wet inside or some shit.

cuz its electric. i lost 2 before i just bought a cheak 8$ dile one. and this was 1 jar to 4 jars bulk so i dont think how white it gets has to do with that. is your tub just on the first flush EZ? or all looked that bad?

Was referring to the picture in my post... there was a higher concentration of spawn in the top couple inches of substrate so maybe that's why it's so white on top. Sucks about your fruits though.

sorry, I just stumbled into your conversation and noticed that it appears that you don't have a casing layer. But if I'm wrong then it might be by the looks of it that its completely colonized. there could be several other reasons why they re not fruiting due to too much co2 build up,lack of moisture, or temperature is to low. I suggest getting ahold of the "Mushroom Cultivator" and check in the back for the trouble shooting guide, I find it to be quite revealing to the novice cultivator.

You stumbled on our conversation but you didnt bother to read it.  He doesnt need help fruiting, he just wanted to know if his sub was fully colonized and READY for fruiting.  Mine needed help fruiting though haha.

My pins are starting to look better by the way.

Here is the tub of B + which already started to fruit small skinny stems, but a new FAT pin just poked up which is good news.  Seems like the new lights I purchased, and ditching the fan that funs 24/7 has benefitted me.

Here is the new Blue Meanie tub, and I have my first pin, looks healthy and considerably fat so I think I should be pleased with the rest of the pins when they come.

How is your tub coming, man?

This is what the tub looks like today, day 6 of fruiting conditions. Should there be visible pins by now??? Humidity has been fluctuating from 80-100%.

Someone said to me that it usually takes 5-7 days to start pinning.  But mine took about 8 or 9, so be a little patient.  If its introduced to fresh air and has a 12x12 light cycle it should pin when its ready.

Any more comments on the last pic that was posted? The monotub is now on day 8 of fruiting conditions, hopefully they will show up soon.

2 weeks is entirely possible before you will see pins. Make sure the FAE is high and within a week you should see pins. It looks good and healthy btw. I have a tray and 2 mini-monos not far behind yours I'm pretty stoked about. Post pics when it fruits.

Fully colonized substrate and good daytime fluorescents and/or natural daylight should start the pinning process between 5 and 14 days just as Psychonaut says, you should be fine, be patient and dont look for like 2 or 3 days, just try it.  Fan with your eyes closed haha.

Should a monotub be fanned? Or is it 'set and forget'?

I have set and forget before and the tub still managed to flourish, but its encouraged to fan out the co2 a few times a day.  Dont run a fan in the room constantly, that will dry out your sub.  A mistake I made that cost me 4 or 5 tubs.

the temp control in my room is a space heater with a fan kindof, its built in in tower like fashion. you set the temperature you want in the room and it automatically shuts off/cuts on to manage it within a few degrees.. works great for my jars since it would be under 65 degrees without it, but is it also going to be suitable for my polyfil style fruiting chamber/ fruiting process?

Id say get a timer and have it blow air for 5 minutes every hour on low.  You dont even really need on I guess.

Keeping your fruiting chamber at the right temp is good too, that thing should be suitable if its only running a heated fan everytime it needs to ballance the air.

My tub took 21 days to pin after being put in fruiting conditions.

I live in the northeast so its gotten colder now, the temp drop is probably causing it to slow.

Looks like you still have very healthy myc though.

Should we be fanning before pinning?  Thats what I have been doing.

Ya, I think it is supposed to give the mycilium time to penetrate all the way through the substrate and allow it to absorb as much nutrients as possible before fruiting.

Not exactly.

When your sub is colonizing, the mycellium is stretched out and is looking for nutrients, ONCE your substrate is fully colonized, the mycelium will "consolidate" or rather get its hold on the substrate, like an open hand that finally covers an orange and then squeeezessss to make sure its got its grip on it.  Takes anywhere from a few days to a week, I always wait one week, a little more just to be safe in case my sub wasnt ACTUALLY COLONIZED.

Yes, you should see circular patches of fuzzy myc start to shrink down and "knot" up, these will then turn into pins.  Patience!!!

One once told me that the worst way to spend a day is looking at jars and tubs waiting for something to happen.

Go out and have fun, the tub will do its thing, all you need to do is make sure that fucker stays moist, once it dries out your a goner.

If that was necessary then fahtster's method of laying out the substrate to light immediately after spawn wouldn't produce good flushes right?

Immediately after spawn?  That doesnt make sense, darkness is for colonization.  It might not finish consolidating if you just introduce it to fruiting conditions too early, thats why my first tub failed.

Is it possible to recolonize a substrate?  Like if I fruited it too early?  Can I put it back in the dark and tape it up?

From fahtster's Late Casing thread
Quote:

1.  If you keep a casing layer off the top of the substrate and expose the sub to light from the time you lay it out, you are initiating knotting on the entirety of the top of the substrate.  This will ultimately give you more fruits, at least some more fruits compared to the alternative.  When you cover the sub with a casing layer, you are cutting off light penetration to some of the sub.

i know what you are saying but you let the spawn colonize the sub then sit a day. then put in light and case. wich is what i do i do not let it colonize the caseing.

A few spots showed up on the substrate a few days ago, they don't look like pins. For reference, one of the "small dark orange water droplets" that were previously thought to be the first signs of pins turned into one of these as well. Is it contams??? :frown:

Whats the temperature inside the tub?  Rh?

Mine took 21 days to pin, just keep that in mind ok?

Keep that fucker humid until then, I had moist water droplets on mine the whole 21 days before it pinned, you wanna keep it like that, just stuff in a lot of polyfil and make sure your fanning it 2-4 times a day.  Soft fans, not hard fans.  If it doesnt look moist in there, spray it a few times here and there, once it pins, it should keep its humidity until you start picking mushrooms.  This is what I did, and I harvested 68 dry grams from the first flush.  Now I'm waiting on the 2nd.

I wanted the sub to start pinning as soon as it was done colonizing... The sooner it pinned, the less chance of contamination I had before at least getting one flush and the less amount of water it lost through evaporation by just sitting there.  The point about nutrient absorption... I'm sorry, but I don't think it makes the difference that the point intends... what isn't absorbed before the first flush gets absorbed for the second and I don't know if I even buy it to begin with.

So however I got the tubs to pin ASAP, that's what I did.  It's not standard by any means, but then again, I'm not a standard-kind-of-guy.  It definitely worked for me.  it worked on my SA's, PE's, HB's and any other tub I did it with... But I knew what I was doing as far as how my isolates would react to the procedures I put them through, as should you.

I learned the basics and the standard operating procedures, THEN I deviated... I've lost more substrates than anyone would like to admit, but it's the losing of those substrates that taught me what not to do.

Certain procedures work well with others and some don't... late casing works awesome with the layering of tubs that I did; where there were two quarts of grain under a 3/4 - 1" straight bulk substrate on top much, much better than if it was just straight grain... much better and so on.  So you win some and definitely lose some.

Just find what works and stick with it; alter it, etc.

You introduced it to fruiting conditions way too early. In my opinion this slows down colonization/consolidation whatever you want to call it.

you said you did 6 qts spawn to 24 quarts sub. That's 1:4. In my experience it takes 8 days b4 fruiting at 1:2 and two full weeks at 1:4.

You put it in fruiting conditions after 4 days. So at that point vegetative growth probably slowed to a crawl, but it wasn't fully colonized, so it didn't want to pin either.

The yellow/orange you observed is metabolites. It's usually not a bad sign. It sometimes means you're ready/overdue to fruit, sometimes it just means the myc fought off some bacteria, which was probably the case for you, since at 4 days it surely wasn't overdue.

I've had pretty good luck with monotubs and I've never fanned them. I thought that was kind of strange advice. I notice in the most recent pics all the little water droplets are gone and the myc looks pretty dry.

I think at this point you might case it to get it to unstall and to hydrate it as it looks pretty dry.

In the future you should probably wait longer to introduce light and air exchange. If you time things just right, you'll see pinning within just a few days from the time you introduce fruiting conditions.

2 cents.

Thanks - next time will wait for 'consolidation' time. How will casing now the sub get it to unstall?

Humidity has been kept at 80-100% BTW, FAE exchange, still not seeing anything.

One of my friends just said it took 23 days for his to pin.  Mine took 21 days.

The above advice is good.  But still, it may not be your case, you need to find out for yourself.  If after 24 days you still see nothing and that it is dry.  Dot he casing layer.  I have not tried it yet but..

Go get yourself some peat moss and some hydrated lime.  Mix the 2 together with some verm and gypsum and pasteurize it just like you did your substrate.  Put on like 1/4 inch ontop of yuour substrate and your sub will soak up the moisture it needs to squeeze some pins out.  But again, just keep waiting a little longer, how long has it been?

There's a bag of pre-pasteurized 50/50 Peat/Verm sitting next to the tub... was gonna go for a late casing, but then again humidity was pretty good in the tub so was gonna try uncased. Suppose it'll wait another week or so... Today marks 18 days of fruiting conditions.

Yeah wait another week man.  If your near the north where its cold thats def the reason why its taking so long.  I was gonna do a late casing but then I woke up to pins everywhere, just got to my second flush today.  My substrate is pretty dry but it just keeps on growing, I mist it once a day just to keep the top moist, its been working good.

In some of your pics you have the polyfill in. In the last overview, you have the polyfill removed. Whats your method for removing/replacing polyfill and maintaining Rh / giving FAE?

Oh I just took them out for a second so I could pick some of the mushrooms on the side thats all.

When my sub is done colonizing, usually my tub is really really moist.  So I untape the holes and dont put polyfil in for like 1-2 days.  Then I put the polyfil in.  Get an analog hygrometer and your just gonna have to see how much polyfil you can put in while still keeping the humidity between 87-97.  92 is perfect for me.

I have my polyfill stuffed in pretty tight, but I make sure that I fan my tub 2-3 times a day.  If the sub looks dry, I give it a mist, just 3 squeezes from a high elevation so that it all falls down on it nicely.

So today the first pins showed up in a corner of the tub. Hopefully it's a sign of more to come. But then...

Saw little green flecks one one area of the sub (right in the center of the picture). Fuck. Anything to stop it?

yeah i don't see it either.

Remember that trich first shows up as really really white, dense, fast spreading growth. Then it sporulates and turns green.

I see the small green specks, but trich doesnt start out like that.  Maybe cobweb, but its unlikely.  Only way to tell what it is is to wait for it to get bigger.  Patience young skywalker.
