Bridgesii rooting
    #11357091 - 10/31/09 11:48 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Yesterday i poped my bridgesii cuting in the ground. I planted it couple inches deep and in a decent sized pot. Only thing that worries me is that the soil was on the moist side. Hopefully I'll get a camera to take pics too. Any tips for a good start?

I would choose a slightly elevated area so you're promoting water drainage away from the cactus.

They can handle a weekly watering but I'd keep an eye on them during times when it's raining for multiple days.

Otherwise, you should be able to expect a friendly, strong cactus that can tolerate quite a bit.

Good luck.

I agree with World spirit, my bridgesii cuttings are tolerant to more moisture than say a pachanoi.

When I first plant a cutting I bury it 3-4 inches deep, depending on size that is, this allows more roots to spring forth from the areoles.

I plant the cutting in some soil then lightly water it to "set" it better and then let the soil dry out until roots form, which only takes a week or two for them to form from my experience.

Just let the soil dry out, your cutting will be fine.

I forgot that it's indoors :gethigh: Weather here is way too harsh for normal outdoor growth. I sat the little green fellow on the south side window seal.

If it's a potted cactus growing indoors, that's fine.

You should plan on watering it REGULARLY - the same day each week, without over-watering it.

Choose the proper cacti soil mix (I used to follow the tek at www.basementshaman.com).

Cover the soil with tiny rocks or something to keep molds out.

Use good quality water.

Consider cacti supplement from lowes.com.

I planted it in a cactus mix i picked up from local home&garden center. The texture is sandy like.
But i still have to wait a couple of weeks before i can apply more water, right? Until it roots.

Be very careful with bridgesiis, they seem to rot from just whispering water in their ears when they are unrooted... Make sure there is some roots before watering and water very sparingly at first

I would agree with HellDragon and be cautious with water around bridgesii until it has some roots. I recently stuck a cutting in moist soil and in four weeks I had a rotten cactus. This time I have it resting on top of the soil and no sign of rot yet.

Only ever root cuttings in dry soil. No point putting them in damp soil, cause they don't have roots. You'll just increase the chance of rot.

My bad. Wasn't my intention to do so. I'll do something to help the soil dry faster.
