Coco coir question
    #11357309 - 10/31/09 02:33 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Do you guys think 3 bricks of coco coir is enough to make 2 18 gallon mono tubs doing a 1 to 4 spawn to sub ratio?

Measure the footprint of your tub (minus off an inch if its not square, but has a lot of contour to it). Multiply those two numbers then multiply that by 4. Take that number and google "x in^3 in quarts" (x being your number from before). This will tell you the total amount of sub you can put in @ a 4" depth.

Divide that number by 5, and thats how many quarts of spawn to use. If using 3/4s full grain jars, multiply that number by 5/4s to know how many jars to use.

1 brick of coir makes about 3-4 gallons of sub. in my 70 qt tubs (17.5 gal) I was using 8 jars (6qts) of grain, 1 brick of coir, 1 qt worm castings and 2 qts verm and it was running almost 5".

2 bricks will likely leave you with leftovers, although 1 brick, 8 qts verm and 2 qts of (coffee, castings, whatever) should be plenty enough. That's 24 qts of bulk, @ 1:4, that would be 8 jars total, or about 16 qts/tub for 4" depth. I think mine run like 15-17 qts for 4", assuming you don't have a bizarre l x w x h ratio, I would assume yours would be similar.

or just do it the easy way, make a bunch of sub then if you have any left over save it for the next batch always works for me...

don't mean to hijack the thread but i'd really like to clarify something.
can you use coco coir alone as a bulk substrate?
some people seem to have a lot of success with it, but others claim that it doesn't have any nutrients and should only be used as a casing layer.... i'm a little confused. are people mixing it with other stuff?

thanks man. that's good news. i can get coir relatively cheap where i live so it could be what i go for should i choose to advance to any sort of bulk grow in the future.

then again, i can get horse poo for free...

50/50 coir verm is a very fault tolerant and successful mix. Adding in 5-10% gypsum isn't essential for a grow but probably the single most beneficial extra that can be added. Some suggest to add gypsum in pretty much every stage of growing, short of a casing layer.
