Free Anti-Virus
    #11356211 - 10/31/09 09:46 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I'm needing a new anti virus program soon and was wondering if there's a reliable free anti virus program.  What kind of free security programs are out there?  Has anyone used any of these?  What kind of experiences have people had with free security programs??

Thanks!

i never used pay antivirus and didn't really have problems on my computer when i used windows.  I would go for avira antivir as its one of the best free ones.

best security is you securing yourself, not entering your personal information into random forms, and not downloading and installing shit your not sure of.

peace

I always thought the AVG antivirus was good.

I have never paid for an antivirus. These are my top 3 choices for free antivirus'

For AVG, choose the larger file. Same goes with Avast, choose the english (or prefed language). I've never had good luck with download managers.

AVG Free

Avast

Avira Antivir

AVG has tested to be one of the poorer free antivirus programs.  After version 6.5 it really went down hill.  Avast is a little better, and last I checked, Avira Antivir is one of, if not the, best free antivirus.

IF you do not use internet exploiter (except for downloading a real wab browser and updateing the system )
and do not run non open source free software (including share ware)
you do not need a virus scanner at all
I brow beat my family (while cleaning up messes left from viruses) with these 2 rules and threatened NOT to help any more till every body fallowed then
in the last 10 years nobody has had a virus

I like clamAV because it dosen't stay resident on your system, and runs only on schedule.

that's a big part of why I run linux
( <-- see tux over there )
to me using windoze is like driving a car with boxing gloves on
but even with me offering to help them they are scared to switch and can't let go of the games

Eh Linux isn't ready for primetime yet.  Most of my friends and family wont touch it because frankly it is not user friendly.  For instance my friend really wanted to use a wireless USB adapter to take advantage of his N network.  Now Linux does have the RT2870 driver loaded in by default, the RT2870USB and RT2870STA.  After I blacklisted the RT2870USB driver he could connect to the internet.  However he could only connect to the G network as the Linux driver was not a fan of allowing a WPA N network to cooexist.  Its things like that that stop it from getting adopted

i run only open source software, and dont ever get viruses, i also load assloads of it on my parents system, thunderbird, firefox, openoffice, and whatever else she needs and i can find that has good reviews...me thinks open source is SAFER than closed source, because you can just see whats there easily enough.

ive never installed windows and it was just ready to go. there is always a driver issue.

if you do youre research before buying hardware then you wont have any issues at all. i know i can plug in any hp printer and do absolutely nothing and it works perfectly.

linux is user friendly        it's just picky about who it makes friends with

IF you could go out and buy a computer with linux preinstalled it would be MORE user friendly
linux dose NOT change it's settings just because the printer was off at boot time and not go back to the correct setting at the next boot when the printer is on
(at least once a week I have to walk some member of my family through fixing this )
I have also seen windblows change it's screen resolution on it's owen as well as net work settings sound settings
linux IS NOT A COCK ROACH NEST like windoze is

and not the least of all linux by god dose what you tell it to do if your root your god no ifs ands or buts it's just YES SIR !! (at the command line)

there is no virus scanner for linux because it dose not need one (there is chkrootkit but it detects changes made by some one breaking in to the computer to install back doors and things like that )

when you look at all the maintenance and repairs that need to be done to windows it works out over all to be
less user friendly than linux

how user friendly is it to pack up the computer and haul it to the repair shop just because you forgot to turn the printer on before the computer or it gets a virus or some malware trashed the system or it got a virus or it just randomly changed some setting

http://www.clamav.net/

works just fine on linux, so yes, there actually is a virus scanner for linux, though its not really needed.  It is great if you forward mails w/ attachments to other users who may have windows.

peace
