ok i looked for my answer elsewear...but couldn't find any.
i was thinking of just buying a shroom growing kit, (i don't really get the whole 'do it yourself' thing, and i'm kinda lazy)
but i was just wondering if growing them yourself, works out better than buying a kit.
and, how dose the kit work???
and i'm sorry if this is one of thoses stupid questions.

Kits are totally useless in my expeience. All you need can be found at the health food and farmer supply store. And Walmart. For a fraction of the cost too.
Kits come with small amounts of everything. Usually just enough for one try. If it's your first time you'll be likely to screw something up and have to go shoping anyways.
Kits suck.

Kits usually include everything you would buy yourself but with an extra $50-100 or so on the price tag. You will get mushrooms, yes, but where's the fun?

Here is a list of what I used when I grew about half a year ago:
1. 1/2 pint canning jars, bought at Wal-Mart
2. Vermiculite, bought at a garden store
3. Brown rice, bought at a health food store
4. Spore syringe made from a print (from Spore Works) and a syringe from a horse vet... or you can just buy a spore syringe from a vendor
5. A large tub, bought at Lowes
All this came to under $30, the most expensive part was the spores, about 2/3 of the cost. Set aside a day to buy the shit you need, prepare the jars, and innoculate, it's really best to do it yourself.

Stick with the PF-Tek. IMO, grow kits aren't worth it.

Mycro bags arnt a bad idea for someone that might be lazy. you just buy the bag with pre-sterlized substrate then you just inoculate through the self healing injection port with syringe. $25 for all you need Mycomania couldnt be any easyer

thanks a lot for the help. but money isn't a prolbem for me, i make lots, and currently live with my folks, so paying the extra 100$ isnt' a prolbem. but i'm going to go look at the kits tomrrow, and see what they have, and if they look really shitty, then i am just going to to use what this site has. even if i do get a kit, i'll probably only get it once, then mabey try by myself.
i wish i had a growing buddy

Walmart, being the biggest corporation, bringing in the most income globaly has really all one needs for growing mushrooms..tupperware,jar's,thermometer's,vermeculite,perlite, although i don't think they cary BRF, but Nutter's does!!!!!! and theyhave jellybelly's at nutter's, so why wouldnt you want to go there..

ok well i went with just buying the spores, and after christmas is over, i think i'll start growing on my own...it'll be intresting.

well done. you made the right decision.
you just need:
for stage 1 (growing mycelium): jars, stuff to colonise, a cooker, spores.
and you already have the spores.
for stage 2 (growing shrooms): a tub, some humid stuff.
you'll have mushrooms by valentine's day. good luck!
