Why aren't there any shrooms?

I'm pissed off.  I just moved here to Virginia and have a nice coniferous forest right behind my house.  I went walking around out there, it is ankle deep in soggy old wood and leaves, dank as hell, and I didn't see but one fucking mushroom, and it definitely wasn't one that looked like anything I would eat.  The conditions are perfect, why no shrooms?  I have a guide and it seems pans and p. caerulipes are in season for this area.

I looked all day today in the woods, on a golf course, and in a cemetery. found nothing. I'm beginning to think that spores are just a myth.

this year has been weird, the weather got cold really quick you may be about a month (more like two weeks) too late. is this your first time hunting?

no I've been hunting all fall. I did find a couple Shaggy Manes, though. cool looking things.

I also live in VA and find multitudes of edibles.  Sulfur shelf, old man of the woods, shaggy manes, every now and then I'll find some bear's head tooth fungus, numerous boletes, an occasional lactarius (found a lactarious indigo once).

Early/mid spring and early fall, when it has been wet.. they're out there.  Also, depends on your altitude/location in VA.
