help with salvia plant

heyup. so ive been given a salvia plant, which was looking really healthy when i got it, just had a few leaves with brown tips. in the last few weeks, its developed these big brown blotches all over the bigger leaves.
i also noticed that the majority of these brown stained leaves (but not all) are coming from a stem that is browning at the bottom, and im worried might be rotting.
so i was planning on harvesting the browning leaves, taking out the browning stem and doing some cuttings from it, and then feeding my plant with some organic fertiliser. am still really new to growing salvia and am not too sure if thats the thing to do or not. any ideas or advice would be appreciated
thanks

That one stem doesnt seem healthy, Id cut it off at the base and cut out the bad bit and stick in water like a cutting till it roots and re-plant.

Some of my salvia's leaves have a few of these black spots, they seem to do no harm. And that stem seems fine too.

not too sure about why the three stem node is under the soil either, thats just how i got it.
am pretty sure the stem's looking worse than when i originally got it, was just looking a bit brown but im pretty sure its now looking a bit more like its rotten...
considering its mostly that stem's leaves that are browning, think will try making some cuttings out of it and then i get more plants, win win situation as i see it...
any ideas on a good potting mixture for it? ive got some shopbought potting compost and some builders soil, recon that will do? although worry that builders soil might have crap in it that will be bad for the plants...

potting soil with a bit of perlite seems to be a popular choice.

A good mix (my favorite) for salvia is: 1 part perlite or pumice 1 part orchid bark 1.5 parts good organic potting soil without peat moss feel free to toss in mycorrhizae or anything too, they will be good for the roots.

Get a better pic of the stem, but I really don't think that's rot. Salvia stems sometimes 'harden' off a little bit and turn brownish in what I guess is an attempt to better support the plant. All of my older plants get it in some stems and it's definitely different from rot. Does it feel squishy to you? If not, do not trim it. Another reason that makes me think it's not rot is salvia does that on her leaves all the time. Think of salvia as a plant that has PMS. If anything is slightly imperfect, she browns her leaves -- and note that the newer growth seems to be unaffected. I'd wait before chopping anything off.
Oh, and that soil mix nitelife recommends is amazing, I've used it on many plants to great success.

thanks for that. yeah havent cut anything yet, decided to hold off cos i had a good look and a feel and the stem doesnt really seem to be rotting, certainly not soft or anything. what i think is weird is that nearly all of the browning leaves are coming off the stem which is browning...
anyway, will hold out and see what happens, if it gets dire then il snip it and take some cuttings, but would really rather not do that til spring...
thanks again for the help

You did the right thing then. If it isn't soft, that's not rot, salvia just does that on stems as they age for some reason.

Small changes in the environment or uncomfortable environments to sally can cause brown leaf spots, I see she is getting used to the environment, she'll grow some new leaves and be fine! Good luck!

Yes, Salvia is a little bitch.... All the time, her leaves love to turn brown for absolutely no reason.... Salvia PMS... lol.... Although, it doesn't seem to really effect the new growth, which shows that she really isn't hurtin all that much, just being finicky....

Yeah, I had one that grew with curled leaves and brown edges for a while and seemed to have no issues, it just didn't look pleasant to the eye, but the plant seemed overall happy...
then one day a t-shirt fell on it and snapped the stem in half , since then it's been sad and won't grow anymore, but at least I managed to take a cutting and get that one to grow.

is there any reason in particular the soil shouldn't have peat moss? I ask because I went looking today and couldn't find any soil mix that didn't contain peat moss.
I ended up getting this
and some orchid bark and perlite.
the mix contains sphagnum peat moss and composted bark fines Natural fertilizers. would that be alright?

Peat moss isn't good for a few reasons. First, it doesn't allow good drainage and can increase risk of root rot. Also, after time, it settles down to the bottom of the pot and makes a peat bog which messes up the ph of your soil. You will be fine though, just don't go too heavy on it- I grow lots of salvia in mixes that contain peat, but it is better without it... Good choice with the orchid bark- what brand did you get? Some orchid bark sucks because the chunks are too huge, but it is still beneficial, and I also put .75 inch of orchid bark by itself at the bottom of pots. Good luck with the salvia!!

well the soil I've been using with my plant didn't contain peat moss, but it was pretty cheap soil also. and it's not doing too well at all. I'm not sure if it's the soil or not, but the leaves are curled. and I've heard that small/curled leaves and lack of growth is due to poor soil quality.
I got schultz orchid exotic potting mix. the pieces seem pretty big should I crush them up?
