ID request: Found these in my back garden :)
    #11350653 - 10/30/09 09:05 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post of hopefully many.  I'm hoping some of you pros can help out an beginner with an ID:

I found this beauty and a couple of his friends in my back garden yesterday:

Habitat:
Long grass sprung from turf laid about about 3 months ago.  Found after a rainy night in the shadow of the house.  South coast of England near Bournemouth.

Gills:
Brown, see pic below:

Stem:
Length of stems is around 9cm, stem width around 1.5mm, light grey at the top getting darker towards the bottom.  bruises to brown.  Flexible.

Cap:
15mm diameter, darker brown band on the outside edge.  Dark spot in the centre. Some speckeling between the tip and the outer band

Spore print color:
This is the first spore print I've ever taken, I'm quite proud of how it has turned out
Looks jet black though:

Bruising:
Not a great deal.  Stem seemed to bruise from a light grey at the top to a darkish brown.

So, any ideas?  Have the libs arrived in my garden to say hi or are they just LBMs?

Rgds,

Mycoplasmic

Looks like a Panaeolus, which one, I don't know.

I've never found them myself, but I've got a good hunch those are pan subbs!

Wait for a TI, though...

Thanks for the responses so far guys, it is much appreciated.

Especially thanks for pointing me at panaeolus / panaeolus subbalteatus, from there I've been able to focus in on some specifics.  The top link in Google for panaeolus subbalteatus is of course shroomery

http://www.shroomery.org/9608/Subbedhunter420s-Guide-to-Hunting-and-Identifying-Panaeolus-subbalteatus-P-cinctulus

One point leaps right out:

"Subbs grow abundantly on newly laid lawns. The newer the lawn, the better the chances of them being there."

I'd love to hear what a TI thinks...

Those are Panaeolus cinctulus, aka subbs.
