I don't listen to it much in my free time but I've had a bunch of tests on recognizing all the different forms of raga, rasa, alap, tala and gat. pretty interesting stuff that actually is extremely musically intricate

yeah i untill just now had the notion that their music must be vastly superiour to ours, but once again annoyance had me turn it off. I have decided that momentarily i find it unlistenable, I'll try again whilst tripping.

Yes, and yes.  I love modern music with Indian influences as well.  Thievery Corporation, Tabla Beat Science, etc.

well you have to determine what you're comparing it with when you say "ours."

personally I think most popular music right now is complete shit in terms of musical knowledge and pushing the envelope of musical theory. it's just boring as beats in common time, barely even going outside the limits of major/minor scales.

listen to some Chris Thile, Bela Fleck, or pretty much any good jazz musician. you'll hear scales and chords you didn't even think existed, all while intertwining a gorgeous melodic line. you have to search around, but it's possible to find music that's musically educated and still melodically rich

I mean our classical music. I mean; indian popular music/ bollywood music sucks pretty much equally hard as ours my friend. And I am not musically ignorant, as you seem to assume in your comment.

actually I was assuming quite the opposite. most people I talk to wouldn't even know that india had classical music.
and I agree, popular indian music is fucking terrible.

Ravi Shankar, yes.

I hardly trip, but if I did, I would.

i've been interested in indian classical for a while now.  i will be going to india eventually, and as a guitarist i really admire their pure skill and dedication to what music really is.  indian musicians jam harder than most people realize.

i'm looking for a song to upload now out of my pretty extensive collection and it's hard to find one that is under the 20mb upload lol.  i love the jam band genre so i have no problem with 10-30 minute songs but that's not some peoples cup of tea.  here's a nice little short one.  pack your chillum and kick back.

I know where you can find this guy:

http://www.parashurambhandari.com/

I met him.  He's a really cool guy.  Very nice.  Friendly.  But totally into working for money...

His musical talent could get him places, but he's stuck for the moment working for a krishna guy's business.  Field manager, if you will.

Just listened to the samples at the bottom, for the first time, and I'm impressed that this is the same guy.

Wow.  Props, Parashuram!  (pronounced Parshram)

Sitars are strange to play.  The Sarangi is where it's REALLY at, apparently.
