What to do with wet feet ?
    #11352027 - 10/30/09 03:35 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

So you're walking and your boots decide to leak, now you have wet feet and many miles left to cover. What's the best course of action to take, if any ?
How about after care, remedies ?

I spent 2 days earlier this week after a trek walking around like Abe from Abe's oddysee, my soles and toes felt scorched and now i have to look forward to the itching and the skin peeling off in huge strips.
Not the first time this has happened,,.

So what do ya reckon's the best way to reduce damage ?, if not in the field then later on when you return home ?

there is probably some fancy invention for it , but i change socks to dry ones and put my feet in plastic bags then inside by boots (if leaking).  still got sweat, which sucks, but better than water logged sloppy socks.  i tend to over pack socks so i will also change socks 2-3 times a day if i need to....feet are so important to protect on the trail, as you say peeling sucks....and gets worse if still in the hills.

Could do with some sort of gortex inner sock, i tried the bags today and it worked alright for a while,, still ended up soaked though so i need new boots/thicker bags or more of them.

I'm aiming to be immune to bad weather eventually,,..

then better boots would be wise   especially if your planning longer hikes.

One thing I learned was with  feet especially in cold temps is always use foot powder. It keeps your feet dry and warmer due to less moisture due to sweating.

That means parting with my old ones,, :frown:. They took me across the Gobi desert,, but i suppose they are nearly 10 years old,,..

I love those things but they're not up to the UK climate anymore.

I wonder if there's any miracle ointment you can rub on feet afterwards to condition and stop the peeling.
Foot powder might well improve make shift guards like the bags as well as being used generally,,.

I know how tough it is giving up an old pair of boots. :smirk:

Best to try and avoid it altogether.. You pretty much have two choices - wear well ventilated shoes that allow plenty of airflow / fast drying, or get some nice gore-tex/waterproof boots.
Getting your feet wet is inevitable on some trails.. or just from sweat... the best bet I usually find, is to wear two layers of socks.. the bottom layer a wicking sock like polypro or something to wick the moisture away from your foot, and the top layer a padding like wool.
When you GET wet feet, best to just change into dry socks. I always carry spares.. not gonna do much good though if your boots are constantly leaking.
Cause the worst thing while hiking is to have jacked up feet with blisters and the whole 9 yards.

For TREATING chaffed feet, blisters etc... carry these items in your first aid kit: Second Skin, Moleskin, Blister Pads, Antibiotic Ointment.

Almost brings a tear to the eye,,,.
That sums it up pretty well, strange attachment but no less real..

Mine don't look half as worn as yours, these are my Brasher air8's.

I wouldn't really expect the water proofing to last more than ten years but i'm wondering if these are salvageable.
I did see some spray on water resister stuff the other day but i don't know if it's up to the task.

I suspect this could be the issue, they were fine last season. I did take some pride in being able to wade about in deep puddles,,.

Thanks for the advice everyone, Shroomism. I knew i'd get some good feedback here.
I've used the second skin before and it's great stuff,, .

you dont gotta toss em, just get new ones for wet hikes

you can think up and buy all sorts of remedies, but fact is (i know you agree, deep down) prevention is the only way.  if you got extra room/weight allowance, bring your old and new ones?  i did that for a bit, but eventually reality hit me and my boots along with a couple otehr pairs were added to our boot tree up by cape scott.

undoubtedly, the best thing to do when you have sloppy wet boots: take them off. start hiking barefoot. i recommend it.

or at least wring your socks out and try to press the water out of your boots every 500 yards or so.

obviously you should start a fire asap and dry out your feet/self when you settle down, and i'd also recommend soaking your feet in warm/hot salted water to prevent bacterial growth. if you can't make a fire, then rub your feet with salt.

I don't think your feet would fare too well bare foot, they'd get shred to bits, then rubbing salt in later ?,, ouch.

If i was bare foot i'd be improvising with leaves, grass and whatever to make some kind of sole/boot,,.

I like the idea of a boot tree Kada, kids throw shoes over telephone wires over here but it's not quite the same thing,,..

i like barefoot, but its only really good if you got a camp and ar not covering much ground....long hauls just spell disaster...as do cold/rough terrain :frown:  but when feasible i agree i like it (especially when pack is at camp and no weight to carry).

give it a go man...trick is to find a big and dead tree where lots of hikers go.  her is ours (we didnt start it, but we got some family generations on this tree:) )

i've got moderately calloused feet, so dull rocks and occasional sticks don't bother me.

I spend a lot of time traipsing over rocks, walking off path through heather, bracken and all sorts. My feet would get hammered. I'm out a lot in the shroom season which is usually cold and damp.

I like the boot tree sentiment, tho i'd be worried i'd never see my boots again if i left them somewhere.

the cold doesn't really bother my feet, in fact it numbs it and actually makes my feet more resistant to scrapes.

now old coral rock forests would be hell, but if you build up to it you would have no problems.

one bad cut on your arch or a nice stub to break a toe would really suck.

I've met barefoot hikers on the trails.  Gotta hand it to them, they got some tough tootsies for sure!  But I don't care how tough they get, theres still a measure of protection that my boots offer that'll never be there in bare feet.

Besides....I'm a pussy. :smirk:
