Band-aids are pretty sterile I think so wouldnt it be alright to just put a small square of band-aid over the inoc hole after pulling the cooled down jar out of the pc, and then replacing it with another one in the glovebox after inoculation? The polyfil filters seem to work great if you don't stick a huge horse needle through them. lol.

yeah that works well. i use a small piece of tyvek to cover the hole and then cover that with the sticky part of a band aid

i used them in my goggles when snowboarding to keep them from fogging up lol

thats a good point fig thank you for adding that. I assumed you used the whole band-aid in your goggles and mycomikey is saying use only the sticky part. should eliminate that problem. thanks guys.

Clear 'scotch' tape can be used to cover the innoc hole. Pull a little bit to get rid of what's been out in the air, and the rest is pretty sterile.

If you are going to buy bandaids, look a few feet over and just buy micropore tape?

I know it sounds sketchy at first, but it's true. Tape, plastic wrap, all that kind of stuff is basically sterile. The top doesn't matter, just the sticky side.
You get pretty good at lifting the foil and sticking the tape in one motion.

But, RTV injection ports are so much nicer and easier. And a polyfil filter.

I have a 1/4" silicone injection port with breathable bandaids over 1/8" hole for gas exchange.

and polyfill with 1/4" center hole.

but my fav is synthetic filter discs with 3/16" holes.  :super:

Check out the lid thread in my sig. Silicone ports work great, are easy and cheap. Contrary to common opinion you don't even need RTV silicone, standard will handle PC temps just fine.

seems like the whole silicone injection point is unnecessary.. see why cant you just use a polyfil filter for gas exchange and a bandaid when it seems to work fine.

Whatever works. More than one way to skin a cat. I just use it for the reasons I stated. It's reliable, easy and reusable.

I didn't know they were reusable that's kind of cool. seems difficult to make them though. in comparison.

Heres another thing I don't want to start a whole new thread for-
what are the benefits of using cakes, IF you are gonna crumble them? I realize alot of people have preferred methods but would it be just as effective to use RGS or birdseed for b+ cubensis?

I find them easy, and yes they handle multiple PC cycles. Just swab well with alcohol and flame the needle -good for many jabs.

You're on the right track. I see no advantage to cakes unless you have no PC, which you do.

I would stick to rgs or a blend of rgs and pine shavings for spawn jars, then as close as you can to natural habitat for substrates.

Im going through the same thing with liberty caps.  link in my sig.

cakes are for doing many strains at once and getting prints efficiently.  small projects.:stoned:

but I guess a cake of rgs/verm/soil/grassroots could pin/fruit in a shotgun fc.?.

i agree with the regular silicone
it can with stand up to 400 degrees
thats what i use on my lids

1/8th hole filled with silicone
and 1/4 inch hole with tyvek held on by micropore
works like a charm

funny that you say that. I couldnt think of a good first substrate to try for my other project so I went on a hike to the patch where I picked the mushroom, and dug up the soil exactly where i picked it from, grass roots, the dead wood in the ground, everything. boiled it in a pillowcase for an hour , cooled it in the freezer, and cased the (p weilii) colonized RGS/WBS in it in a tupperware container.

They are easy, they are fast, they are efficient. If you are doing a lot of bulk, you'll need quarts of grain, but for a smaller project cakes are cool.
And if that works out then- no PC.

Edit- also, cakes are versatile. Many species will grow on cakes, and often fruit, even if they won't grow on grains or coir.
