humidity issues
    #11350704 - 10/30/09 11:19 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

i have a pump set up. the humidity has been at 100% from the very beginning. my cakes started pinning then they aborted. i thought maybe my hygrometer was fucked up and the cakes went dry and thats why they aborted. so i dunked and rolled again. when i put them back into the f.c. i added a couple more cakes. the cakes where covered with condensation, like any piece of myc. that was sticking out had a big water droplet on it. when they started to pin they again aborted. so i am trying to figure out how to get my humidity down cause i have a shitload of pins this time around. i am going to cry  if they abort. right now my humidity is at 98%. but the cakes still look soaked? wtf?

What kind of hygrometer? How did you calibrate it?
When you say "pump setup", could you be more specific? And/or post pics?

you want high 90's close to 100% for cakes. Sounds like you need to fan more

ok, doc, i can post some pics but not till tonight.basically i have a100 g. pump running into a filter that runs into a 12 inch bubbler stone in the bottom of my f.c. the f.c is, im going to gues and say about a 30qt. give or take. i have predrilled holes around the top of the fruiting chamber. there is a single row of them the whole way around the f.c. i bought it that way from a sponsor who specifically said not to drill any more. although it is meant to be used as a monotub and not a pmp. i did this set up because i really dont have time to fan.i work ten hour days. go to school and i am an athlete. i basically dont have time to sleep, literally.

if your not fanning automation alone is usually not enough
and you will get a better yield if you fan anyway
fresh air is MOST important when pinning/fruiting
if you dont fan, dont expect great results...thats for any automated setup

Three to four air exchanges per hour are recommended.  An aquarium pump is going to have a hard time delivering that without drying out your cakes.

Without proper fresh air, your cakes can't dry out partially between mistings, nor can your pins.  Standing water on pins is a major cause of aborts, and evaporation of moisture from the substrate is a major pinning trigger.  Both requires fresh air, while maintaining high humidity.  I'd suggest a shotgun terrarium.
