The Importance of Alex Grey's Artwork
    #11350423 - 10/30/09 09:48 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Is there any esoteric value to what is being portrayed in his works?

I believe so.
I've had visions on the mushroom resembling his work very much.

The importance of it , I believe , is knowing that its not just your brain making all this funny stuff up.
Hey ! Someone else has seen it too

I'll clarify my intention of the question.

40 years from now, you're babysitting your grandchildren. Taking advantage of having the whippersnappers around, you decide to clean out the attic. Your 12 year old unrolls and alex grey poster and says "AWESOME" and suddenly wants to know more....

How would his work be important in this context.

it can take one out of the habitual cycle of knowing and bring on a nice sense of "wtf?"?

I have some black light posters.

I am not into art so I don't know what is really meant by importance. Alex Grey's work is under the category of visionary art. Visionary art is an accepted category of art. Wikipedia says some interesting things about it's relationship to surrealism, among other things.

For a 12 year old I might describe it as the work of an artist who tries to capture the mysterious or unknown aspects of human existence and leave it at that.

For a more mature person, Grey's work could probably be a springboard into lots of fields of study, the central ones being art and entheogens, the rest being Eastern philosophy (yoga, chakra psychology, abhidharma etc.); the Joseph Campbell-type notion of the hero's journey with roots in the East and in classicism; ecology; politics, the politics of spirituality et al.

To me, most of his work seems to be about DUALITY and its nature, origin, manifestations, expressions, as well as about the potential of the mind, which has no limits.

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Yes, his art is an attempt to capture real visions he has seen
An expression of the complex (yet unifying) tapestry of existence

Ive had many many visions similar his artwork

It amazing when you see the inner workings & structure of your own body
All the layers, all the veils...

:peace:

But, but - they are all trancey, fractally, spirally, colory, auracally-correct representations of real energy fields normally hidden from view.

:shrug:I think it's kind of tacky. There's much better "cosmic" art out there IMO.

I really like the psychedelic black light posters of the 60s and 70s. Very dreamlike and emotional.

Have to agree with Icelander on this, some of it is alright but it's nowhere near as good as people make it out to be.
