So I'm trying to get out and meet people. I'm kinda awkward, so this is good for me.
The problem is I don't handle weed very well. Just about everyday somebody is offering to smoke me out and it's always awkward to refuse. But I think it would be even more awkward if I wanted to join the session just to have some social company.
Any input on some good social protocol for this situation?

be yourself. if you don't want to smoke just say no. and if thats too hard you can always say your on probation for beating up some dude. makes for a good story, but i don't think you should have to lie about that sort of thing. if you don't want to smoke then don't. you should never have to explain yourself either. some people respect that more than somebody that just smokes because they are offered it. and the people that truely care about you won't give you shit for saying no.

If I didn't really want to get ripped but I wanted to smoke with friends I would just take smaller hits as to not get totally blitzed. Or of course you could just not smoke at all too. =P I always have been effected strongly by Cannabis and other psychedelics. Up to you dude.

When you mean you don't handle weed very well do you mean you get anxious and self conscious? That's how I used to get a lot of times, I eventually had to ask myself why in the fucking world do I keep smoking with people and having the shittiest time ever? It was a lot easier to say no than I thought it would be. And if I did end up saying yeah I would make sure to stop after the first couple hits so I wouldn't spazz out.

I guess it's not really. I'm just thinking of today. I told him I don't handle it well and I get freaked. He tried to understand, but I don't think he really did. He said something like, "Oh, I guess that makes sense if you didn't smoke often and you got really high."

Yeah, just tell them you don't smoke much unless you're going to bed soon, that it makes you uncomfortable in social situations and really sleepy. I tell people that all the time, and trust me, most folks don't care if you smoke with them or not. Thats just one less head to burn up the bowl, they're not going to think any less of you for not smoking.
The majority will respect you more for admitting that you don't handle it well in social situations, rather than getting so baked that you become mute and locked to their couch, staring at the wall, letting out an awkward retarded "hurhurhur" laugh every once in a while.
And don't lie to them, you WILL lose all respect if they see through it.
Just be yourself man and don't do ANYTHING just because it seems like the expected thing to do. Trust me, that will only make you look like a tool and will prevent you from making any truly close friends.

I find the only reason people appear to 'look down' on people who don't blaze is when the person who isn't blazing is judging the people who are blazing. If you make it clear you do like smoking, and you do it once in a while, and that you have absolutely no problem with it, they won't care at all.
You don't have to smoke to be cool with stoners - you have to show that you don't give a shit that THEY smoke. If they think you're judging them though, then they might not be too pleased with you. I think most will agree with me on this.

Definitely.
Don't take an obvious pussy hit like you're avoiding it, just take a nice average sized hit... they will be happy you're taking part and at the same time they're happy you're not a greedy stoner, double win.
Everybody loves a pot smoker that takes small hits, leaves more for the true stoners.

I personally think people who have a hard time handling pot have some kind of kinks that they need to work out.
It's one of the most enjoyable things on earth for me. I can function 100% on it as well.
