P. Pelliculosa expert needed
    #11348565 - 10/29/09 11:25 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

i came upon a patch of at least 10,OOO mushrooms this morning while looking (in vain) for cyans.. unfortunately i didnt have a camera.  they mostly look like mycena and psytharella, but bigger. im sure that there must be some actives in the swarm.. ive scoured and compared as many pics as i can but im still not sure, can i please get a few tips for ID in the field with pelliculosa? i want to nab a few good samples for prints tomorrow, along with my pics tomorrow morning.. so if you are reading this, expert de pelliculosa, give me a heads up and expect some amazing pics tomorrow morning, the sheer amount of mushrooms is humbling.

stop looking at pics and start reading.

what area are you in?

i've collected P. pelliculosa quite a few times now. important features include growth on woody debris on forest floor, small size, petite form, more or less conical caps, very often bluing in the stipes, particularly near the base, smokey brown to purple gills, depending on stage of maturity, purple spore prints, rubbery texture when moist, hygrophanous cap, often showing blueing where damaged as it fades, a viscid cap with an easily seperable pellicle in fresh, moist specimens.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

i usually find them in drainages and riparian areas, where hardwoods such as alder predominate, ground remains moist for an extended portion of the year [usually indicated by dense growth of ground moss, and sword ferns are prolific].

i have also found them in the floor of mostly pure old growth fir forest.

gosh, i guess you got me all figured out

ive been printing and referencing the guides on this site for some time as a guest, please dont take me saying "ive been comparing pictures" as an ignorant or lazy way of IDing, also im not just trying to get high.

thanks for the tips, the removable pellicule will be my way of sorting the ones ive already tested (mycena, supposed Psytharella) im planning on taking samples of any with a removable pellicule, and with dark gills.  I believe some to be active not through some intuitive feeling but through sheer probability..also herons nest above the mulch- would that increase the size of the mushrooms? there was such a variety of LBMs, more than either i or my friend had seen before..

PS i live on vancouver island

i have found them before in the mixxed fir , hemlock forest in BC.up on a mountain. i think i have read clear cuts are good areas to look.i found them by acccident just going for a cruise smoking doobs and we just happened to stop in this exact spot and get out for a piss.
i have been thinking bout going back sometime.it was very cool finding actives deep in the forrest.and the patches are huge.

but i dont see why there has to be any pellys just because there is mycenas.mycenas are EVERYWHERE! when i found them they were very obvious to me what they were,so i guess depending on how many different magic mushrooms you have handled .take some pics and some prints.

i find that i start seeing them only when i get down close to the ground.

the first time i found them, i noticed the first one because i was sitting down.

the last time; because i was climbing a slope comming out of a drainage, which put the ground 4' in front of me at eye level.

There are many Psilocybe "experts" that post here.  You shouldn't have too much trouble with an accurate ID.  I know someone who found P. pelliculosa on Vancouver island years ago.  I think he said it was a hot bed.

Having said that, I really want to see your "10,000 mushrooms."  In over 20 years of picking I have seen one fruiting like that once.  They were the Horse Hair mushroom, Marasmius androsaceus.

Welcome to the Shroomery, Firkin.

I was of the impression that nothing active grew in the redwoods. Did you mean farther inland (out of the redwoods)?
