How To Shop For A Bike

Bicycle shops are dealers and just like dealers they have a high markup. Don't ever pay sticker price for a bike, the dealer knows he can do better, you just got to get to the right person.
First, what you do is call a few places from out of the area and tell them that you are not going to buy a bike but you want to know what they pay for the bike you want.
95% of people won't tell you but patience pays off and eventually you will get someone on the phone who will spill it all.
Then you take your dealer cost and add $100 for assembly. Now go to all your area dealers and offer the Dealer price + assembly and add the idea that you will buy a front and rear light and maybe even a helmet or lock. You've got to add a few accessories to sweeten the deal.
Someone will say yes. Make sure you get your size bike and don't accept a floor model that doesn't fit just because they say that it's the only thing they can do for you.
Pick up your bike and enjoy.
Dont ever pay retail.. I just bought a bike with a $1500 MSRP for $1000 with trip computer and front and rear lights and I still get the 1 year free shop service they offer.
NEVER PAY STICKER PRICE.

No, I'm serious, I've seen some great lightweight bikes, old style bikes, multi-gears, single gears, all sorts. All over town in bike racks.
I'm not saying ride off with them, it's just a great way to see variety.

recently I bought a shitty wal mart bike, rode it for 30 days and then cleaned it up nice and took it back at the end for my money after putting maybe 200 miles on it. good way to buy a bike on a budget

Don't buy a department store bike. Get a service warranty. test ride it. bargain the price. In september I bought a mongoose mountain bike from zellers and the crank started to fail so I brought it back. Went to some bike shops, found a nice bike, the guy reduced the price to 400 bucks out the door with a 5 year warranty. Been great ever since.

No-one steals mine ever, but that's because I usually have to repair the ones I get before I can even ride them, which is why I ended up with them in the first place.
