Is it possible for cross contamination from Kombucha?
    #11346482 - 10/29/09 06:36 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I plan on cultivating several strains in the upcoming weeks and was wondering if it is possible to get a cross contamination from kombucha?  I was last growing kombucha about 6 months ago and was wondering if there is any possibility that any kombucha spores or residue could affect my colonies?  I will be using the same area for my growth and fruiting so I just wanted to make sure that no kombucha could infect my mushrooms.

I will not be using the same containers for my new growths as my kombucha.

Also, can I use the 1 gallon sized glass cookie jars I was using for my kombucha (after sterilzation) for a grain inoculation or is that just too much? The cookie jars are similar to large mason/canning jars and cylindrical in shape. Non-tapered, but still has a mouth nearly as wide at the container, but the lid is just a simple glass lid that sits on top. Could I just seal these with tyvek? If I can re-use these for future growing projects that would be great!

If you name has anything to do with your physical location then we are neighbors!  I'm located in central Florida!  I have heard the song you are referring to, I just can't recall the name at this time.

Ok, cool.  I was leading the believe that, but I wanted to confirm with someone else.  Kombucha IS delicious!  I used to brew with green tea/black tea combo or white tea/green tea combo.  Many of my friends were skeptical to try it, but once they did they instantly became fans.  I was actually introduced to Kombucha from a friend's father who said he brewed his own tea.  After drinking it, he revealed that it was mushroom based and it immediately caught my attention (in a very good way!) I was so curious to try it myself that he sent me home with a culture and directions to brew my own.  Never have I felt so proud of myself by brewing my own mushroom tea.

It was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone with the passion for mycology.
