How to pick them up?
    #1134616 - 12/12/02 08:16 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hi guys!
I'm so happy: my first shroom broke the veil today!!!
But now a silly question... How can I pick it up?
Bare handed? With a tool?
Do I need to cut it away from the rice cake, or I can just pull it, hoping not to destroy the mycelium?
It's the P Cubensis... but it seems so small! It's only 3/4 cm long with a cap 1,5 cm in diameter... it's a sort of primordia, or it's normal?
I will check the pictures...

Thanks,

Andrash

If the cap is opening and the veil is breaking then you have a legitamate fruitbody. I cut mine away from the substrate with a scalpel. Scissors work too. Stamets mentions using a twisting/pulling motion. Alot of your harvesting methods depend on what type of fruit you have, some cling to the substrate more tenaciously than others. I'd recommend cutting over tearing simply to avoid any problem with tearing holes in your substrate. A hole is a million times less likely to produce fruit than a nicely cut surface.

You have proof? Don't listen to him, if you cut, part of the mushroom will left on the cake and could contaminate and ruin your entire cake.

It's covered here.

not sure how I'd prove this... it is the way i do it and it doesn't cause contamination. I have seen new fruits occur in the same spot I had cut a fruit from. tearing disturbs casing (if your casing) and cutting doesn't leave a piece of fruit behind if you pay attention to what your doing and cut it all off...

You didn't do anything to be deemed an asshole so dont worry about it, you were just giving your own opinion. Most of the tek's suggest  that cutting the shrooms off is bad and can cause the cake/casing to contam but since I've always twisted the shrooms off I can't comment on your method..

you can stick a small, very clean nail in the top of your cake, to use for leverage. as for picking, twist and pull--you will notice that the fruiting body has a definite beginning, where the mycilia have first begun to change character. it narrows down to a natural point, in other words.

Sorry but I can't find anything about picking up...
I'm afraid to leave holes in the cake, so I also thought to cut them.
I'll try it...

Bye,

Andrash

Even mjshroomer said something about not cutting mushrooms. Just twist and pull.

You can't find it in the FAQ? Let me show you where it is. First go here:
http://shroomery.org/forums/faq.php
Then click on "Mushroom Cultivation FAQ" because your wanting to know about cultivation.
Then click on "The PF Cake - Birthing through Harvest" because your at the harvesting stage.
Then click on "How do I harvest a mushroom?" because your wanting to know how to harvest a mushroom.
The FAQ specifically states "Don?t use a knive or scissors"

Thank you,
I've done it pulling it away, it was easier than I thought.
Now I have my first shroom!!! But it's too little to make a trip  :frown:
I hope to have more in the next days...

Happy shrooming!

Andrash

I twist and pull them, trying not to pull too much cake out when I'm doing this.

Look, andrash, you can mess your cakes up by cutting them and not removing all of the tissue. If your kinda clumsy with a knife or just getting started then use the twist/pull method. This is tried and true. See, if you cut and leave fruitbody tissue then that mass blues (dies) and becomes an area of mycelium that cannot be colonized and is easily food for incoming contaminants. Twist/Pull isn't perfect either. A more tenacious species such as Matias Romero (PF if I'm not mistaken) has a wider grip on the surface of the mycelium. When you pull, twist, whatever, the substrate tends to come with it. This generally seriously retards any growth in the damaged region and exhausts nutrients and water faster. If using a sterilized scalpel, you shave the mushroom off just taking an almost transparent sliced layer of the surface of the cake. It's like peeling an apple in a way. You cut about halfway in and then rotate the blade around so that it is cutting the base off in a circular fashion much like a clock hand rotates around a dial (cutting edge always perpendicular to the center of the stem). If cut correctly, the mycelium quickly recovers and grows a matrice over the cut area and has a very high probability of producing a fruit in that spot again.
