PF-Tek: Beginner's Grow Log (B+/Ecuador) (12/8: Beautiful New Macros)
    #11345549 - 10/29/09 02:04 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

10/29

Hello everyone,
I've been a shroomerite for a while, but haven't started a grow until just recently. On the 24th I knocked up 10 PF-Tek jars with syringes, half Ecuador, half B+. I'm happy to say that after 5 days, I'm seeing the first signs of growth in one of the jars.

Update: 11-1-09

Grow # - Jar #

1-1 (B+)

1-2 (B+)

1-4 (B+)

1-5 (B+)

1-6 (EQ)

1-7 (EQ)

1-9 (EQ)

So 7 out of the 10 jars are currently colonized with mycellium. I have no sign whatsoever of contamination in any of those jars or the remaining 3 without growth. I am very pleased with the way things are going :super:

Should I continue providing updates with such detail?

Dude it is so cool to see your grow. I knocked up my first 16 jars on the 29th of Oct.I got Brazilian and Cambodian's 8 and 8.Here is the kicker though. . . NONE of the Brazilian's are shoingany signs of growth. But the Cambodians are growing amazingly.I hope to see more from you and as soon as I get my USB cable I'll load up some pics. Nice work man.:mushroom2:

I'm sorry to hear the Brazilians are giving you so much trouble. It sounds like you used the same conditions on all of your jars so maybe the spores were old. If that's the case they may still colonize, so don't give up hope! I can't wait to see some pics from your end, considering we inoculated at around the same time, we'll have another beginner's grow to compare ours to. :smile2:

The jars are chugging along, albeit somewhat slowly. This is only day 12, so I'm not too concerned. The only  issue I can see is that jar 1-6 is twice as colonized as its brothers. I suppose I'll have to birth it early? Luckily, there's no contamination that I can detect.

Oh, and two of my EQ jars are showing no signs of colonization :undecided:

What I did with my uncolonized jars and the really slow movers is removed the lids. I know it sounds extreme, maybe not, but my god it brought them to life.  :2cents:

edit: I do have them in a sterile inoculation chamber.

I added a dry verm layer, so it wouldn't be too extreme. I would be concerned about one of them getting contaminated and the spores spreading to the other jars, though. I've got 3 unplugged holes in each jar.

On the sixth I moved my tray of jars to the top of my minifridge, and covered it with a box and blanket for insulation. I'm tempted to conclude that the change in temperature caused this rapid increase in growth, but it could have been normal. Unfortunately, jars 8 and 10 appear to be definite duds.

Jar 6, on the other hand, is damn near close to full colonization. I'm going to give all the jars a week after 100% as RR advises, but #6 will be done long before the other ones. Should I birth it before the others?

With my terrarium completed, all of the jars but one at 100%, and all my supplies assembled, I birthed 4 of the cakes today. Jar #6 was starting to pin already so I couldn't wait for the slower jars to catch up. They're soaking now. Pics to come tomorrow when I put them in the FC.

Woooooo :rainbowcloud:

did you wait the week for consolidation?  I started at the same time as you and have 4 fully colonized b+ jars, but i am dunking one early and letting the others go for a week to see the difference.  Nice, and can't wait to see some pics.

The four I'm currently dunking (and about to roll in a few hours) have had around a week. One of the jars was far ahead of the others and has had closer to two weeks. I'm going to give the remaining four jars a few more days before their own birthing.

I'll take some pics as soon as I find my damn SD card...

congratulations!  this is really cool to see because I currently have 8 ecuadors(first time) at pretty much the same stage you were at on your 11-9 update.

by the way do you know what temp you had them incubating at?  and what temp they're fruiting in?

also how clean is the room they're fruiting in? any kind of air filtration device?  I see you do have them elevated which I've read helps a lot.

thanks for the great documentation!

I had them incubating between 70 and 75 degrees for the first half of the colonisation process, and I then moved them to the top of my fridge for the second. Temps were around 80 degrees from then on. They're fruiting between 72 and 75 degrees.

The room I'm in is a never-before inhabited dorm, freshly renovated. All I know about the air filtration is that they replace the air filter about once every two months. I inoculated my jars in this room and I had no signs of contamination in any of my jars, even the ones that failed to colonise. I spray oust, lysol all surfaces, and thoroughly wash my hands before I do any work. I didn't use a glovebox.

When did you inoculate your jars? Mine are exactly a month old today.

I inoculated 6 on 11/8 so those ones are about 17 days old now, then I have two more I did 6 days later.  My jars were actually also at 70-75 for first week and a half, but were relocated and are now consistently at 75.

Here's cake 1-6 (Ecuador):

Should I go ahead and pick this one?

This one is on another cake, and isn't looking too good:

These guys are very short, and very fat, but it seems so early for one of their veils to be tearing.

those are pretty cool mushrooms

a couple questions - how often do you mist, and fan

and when you mist them how do you do it.

I mist 4-5 times a day, heavily, directly on the cakes. I have a large box fan that I run next to the FC for a minute or two after misting.

I've read that misting too heavily can result in fat asses, so do you think I should tone it down a bit?

2-3 times daily should be sufficient.

Also, when you mist I recommend that you spray upwards into the air above it and let the fine mist fall onto the cakes.  Although they will still grow, I noticed that my cakes didn't do as well when i spayed them heavily and directly.

They do not need that much water either, just a few sprays.. maybe 7 into the air above it.

Got it. My FC has no problem holding humidity so that should work perfectly.

Should I pick that one mushroom?

If you want to, after the veil has started to tear it is ready to be picked.  You can wait for it to open fully, but run the higher risk of contams.  Contams can use spores as food.

I've started picking fruits off that one cake. They're really stunted, only a few inches in height and very fat. I'm a little disappointed. 43g wet so far.

damn those are some short stubby looking fruit. Did those two alone come out to be 43 grams wet? Cause if so that is pretty impressive imo. I would expect them to be pretty potent then.
Here is a pic of one of my first harvest and all together this weighed 40 grams wet.

Nah, I've harvested 4-5 fruits of that size off of the cake, and the total is 43g. I dunno if all of my harvest is going to look like this. That cake is still covered in pins and I've got 7 more cakes to go.

I'll wait for bigger fruits before I attempt any cloning or printing.

Do you think they're so stunted because I overmisted?

Possibly, might try misting less. Mutants do happen tho, sometimes mushies do weird things.

are your mushies getting enough FAE?
I know short mushies is a sign that maybe they could use more air exchange.
but if your getting 40+grams off a cake your not doing anything wrong

I fan constantly, but I suppose it's a possibility. My B+ cakes are just starting to fruit and they're much more normal looking. I'll get some pics up soon so we'll see what happens.

Maybe lack of humidity? Do you have a properly calibrated analog hygrometer in there?

I sure do, and I try my best to keep it around 95%. If I leave it unattended for more than 4 hours, it tends to drop to 85% or lower.
