Is this Naematoloma fasciculare?

I think this is sulfur tuft (Naematoloma fasciculare) but I'm not sure, I'm looking for confirmation.  I'm still new to mushroom identification.

Thank you for your assistance.

Habitat:
Upstate NY, old growth forest.  Growing on and around base of heavily decayed hemlock stump.  Fruiting after rains, right now.

Gills:
See picture - color accurate

Stem:
length 2-2.5 inches, diameter .25 inch, fibrous, thick wall, thin hollow center.

Cap:
diameter 1.5-2 inches

Spore print color:
Look dark purple to me, but have color accurate picture.

Bruising:
none noticed

Other information:
couldn't determine scent, the forest was very fragrant that day.

I think so, but they are calling it Hypholoma fasciculare these days.
(my old field guide says Naematoloma too)

Based on your photos, I lean more towards Hypholoma capnoides, a close relative. I almost always see clear greenish tints to the gills of H. fasiculare.

There is an easy way to tell them apart. Take a small piece from the edge of a cap, put it in your mouth, chew it up thoroughly, taste it, and be sure to spit it out. The poisonous H. fasiculare has a bitter flavor, and the edible H. capnoides is not bitter.

You should be aware that some people are physically unable to detect some bitter flavors, so it is possible that you might taste some, detect no bitterness, and misidentify H. fasiculare as H. capnoides. One way to check is to have other people also try to taste it. You should also then be aware that the ability to taste (or not) some bitter flavors is often genetic, so having family members try them doesn't necessarily count. If you have a couple friends try them and nobody thinks they're bitter then you can say you have a positive ID. In my experience the bitter flavor is very strong - if you have any doubt at all, then you're not tasting the bitterness.


Finally, lots of books list these species in the genus Nematoloma (with various spellings). All of my newer references place them in the genus Hypholoma.

Actually my mother in law is someone who's unable to detect these bitter flavours. Too bad she's hunting for mushrooms as much as time allows her^^

Thank you everyone.  I'll make a note in my guides concerning the name change.  If this is capnoides, then it would be the fourth edible to find in the same forest along with two types of chicken mushroom (L. sulphureus and L. cincinnatus) and maitake.  :smile:

Hopefully I'll be able to do agar isolates of these soon!
