Cascade Range Actives - A Questionaire
    #11344637 - 10/29/09 01:22 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Ok guys, I'm normally loathe to start and new and redundant threads, but now I'm asking if you could please favor me some one-on-one Q&A. I've traversed countless miles of parkland, underneath Doug Firs, in tall grassy fields and I've found TONS of mushies--problem is, I'm seeing so many of the same mushrooms and not once have I found any actives.

First off, not hunting along the coast, but more inland, the Cascades, Mt. Hood and West to the start of the Coastal Range.

And now, my questions:

Is it wet enough yet for cyans?

I'm finding gobs and gobs of fairy ring mushrooms in the needles under Doug Firs (and Russula, of course). What are some of the mushroom species closely associated with Cyans? Libs?

What other trees/habitats should I be looking out for?

Should I bother looking in old cow fields at all, for Panaeolus?

How reliably can cyan "stumps" be replanted in woodchipped flowerbeds for future colonies?

Your better off looking in the city and landscaped areas like parks and what not in chip beds for the cyans. Probably not going to find any in the wooded areas. And P cyans have an agressive mycelium and they respond pretty well with transplants and what not if the conditions are right.

As for other trees, they are fond of alder and i guess eucalyptus. Thats why you look for alder beds in the city. But they are capable of growing with an assortment of woods.

So what about the time of the season? Is it just now getting started around the PDX area, or should I have seen things by now? I'm wondering if I should just give up on the areas I've already searched.

Season is definitely here in Pierce county Washington, but I know there have been finds in PDX (look in PNW thread, it's a huge help.) Remember look in landscaped areas, and if you've already searched an area and found nothing, what's there to look for?

EDIT: ...except for mushrooms of course...

You are in the middle of it.

Search them again.

Then search new areas.

Keep looking until you find them.

Wake up early and hunt until it gets dark.  Call in sick to work if you are employed.

Ok, so does anybody know what other species I should find associated to to let me know I'm on the right track?

When I read it, I saw you wandering on a slope with headfirst and an intense face.
Probably faster to create an own hunting clearing from set of versions. For a case, if you do not shot anything. :smirk:

Here are a couple mushrooms I find in the same habitat as cyans.

Psathyrella

I can't remember the name of this one right now
