desiccant tea bag?
    #11344373 - 10/29/09 12:22 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

So i have a lot of fruits cracker dried, and i want to make a desiccant bag to put in the zip loc to make them last as long as possible, i searched the board but can't find a good way to make the desiccant tea bag that i have heard mentioned here.  My desiccant (damp rid)  tends to get a little greasy and wet when it soaks up enough moisture, so how would i make a bag that for sure won't nasty up my mushrooms?  i tried getting silica bags from the shoe store, but i was asked to leave from 2 diff stores, and im not gonna steal it, so what is the best method to make a desiccant bag i can keep in with my elbows?

I got color changing silica from a hobby store in the flower section...

90% clear, 10% color changes blue = dry  and pink = "wet"

was 6 bucks, im still having issues with drying them ... kinda frustrating, how long should this process take

you can buy them empty, pinch close and tie off with the string, usualy attached, or roll it over a few times and staple it...

i have used coffee filters
double them up
put damprid in it
then close the top with a rubber band
that worked for me

fill a pill bottle with it and tape a tea bag down over the top, or glue it, or rubber band... that way you get a solid container with a vent for air exchange

You can buy Silica Gel packets premade in Tyvek or Cotton pouches as shown here:

http://www.silicagelpackets.com/

Also remember that all Tyvek is not made equal. There is about 30 different types/numbers of Tyvek material made for different purposes. The kind they use for Silica Gel is called "active packaging" and is not the kind of Tyvek they use on USPS mailers.

Heat sealer + Tyvek + damp rid = custom desiccant packets.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?
