ID Request: Possible P. semilanceata
    #11287073 - 10/20/09 07:58 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat: Grassland - found growing out of clumps of grass.

Gills: Brown to pale chestnut brown. Gills are free.

Stem: Whitish, pretty fragile, flexulous. Very thin.

Cap: Olive to gray with orange nipple, viscid with separable gelatinous pellicile, hygrophanous, 1-2cm in diameter.

Spore print color: purple to black.

Bruising: Slightly bluing if at all.

Location: Picked in PNW

Sorry I forgot to include a shot of the gills but I hope the spore print will make up for it. So are these in fact libs like i think they are?

So can I take that as a second opinion or do I need to wait for another "trusted identifier" to post an ok? Sorry, I've just never picked and ate my own mushrooms before and wanted to be extra sure (and safe ).

Here's a pic of the dried and finished product and a few pic's from today that I found right next to yesterday for extra verification purposes. Thanks again to both of you for your help with my ID'ing.

In my humble opinion these are likely Psilocybe strictipes. I've seen quite a few libs in my time, but I've never seen an entire collection lacking the sharp umbo that's typical in P. semilanceata.

Libs come in all shapes and sizes not all have a pronounced nipple so do your homework on identifying them :]

True, but read what I just posted. Unless they were all picked in one and the same spot and share the same genetics it is highly unlikely that the whole find doesn't sport a sharp umbo. That's why I suspect them to be P. strictipes.

the greyish color according to stamets book seems like strictipes. i find these alot too. the other day i picked hundreds of these and  my flatties and just one lone classic looking semi!i think real semis are alittle bit meatier and the stem is a bit thicker.

Before you ask the answer is Yes, you have to say the whole thing and yes you have to say it every time, and yes that includes the "a pimp named" part.

I was thinking these were Strictipes ?, now you say about the area thing i'm unsure, they were all found in the same spot.

Hope no one minds me sticking these here,.

Macroscopic features can vary widely within one species.

True, but they do match the wiki page for Strictipes beautifully.
I know it's always a tough call with these things, they're beautiful mushrooms in any case !

Reply to forty6andtwo
Those really look like Strictipes. And they do frequently grow in the same areas and sometimes next to each other from what I've read. Now that I look it seems you have both Libs and Strictipes in your first pics

Mikeyyork they look close. Any bruising? Did you take a spore print?

Yeah there was bruising on one similar to the usual lib bruising at the base, they're already verified as potent,,.
