Gymnopilus ID
    #11343759 - 10/29/09 09:07 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

i found some mushrooms growing on a tree stump
i think there gyms but im not sure there orange to yellow a fairly fibrous stem , slight veil attached, gills are a bit more dull than the stem and cap. they also bruise a little bit green after an hour or 2.
the spore print is kinda brown purple and a bit dark. they were found in late October in the UK.

i havnt got a camera at the moment so i found some pictures that look almost identical.

especially these with the wierd looking stem

Your spore print is the wrong color for Gymnopilus.

Did they look like this?

If so, its Hypholoma fasciculare.

purple brown sounds like some kind of hypholoma, however they do look alot like some gyms iv found...the spore print should be a distinctive orange color.  And if you are willing to send me a spore print i would be happy to tell you 100% what you got there.

PS: if they did indeed bruise greenish/blue then im fairly certain you got some active species of gym.
Due to your spore print color, dont consume these yet...Allow someone on the shroomery to do some microscopy to verify. Send me a PM if you want help.

Those aren't pictures of his specimens. He said they look like the mushrooms in the pictures.

He has a Hypholoma species if the print is purple, and H. fasciculare is known to have a green tint to it.

Probably toxic.

Post pictures of the actual specimens if you want to really verify their identity.

hmm thought fasciculare had greenish tented gills, and he said after 2 hours they "bruised" now i could see how a nooby could mistake original color with bruising, but i wasnt aware that H. Fasciculare bruised greenish on the stem?

The H. fasciculare I find here in Washington are neon yellow, almost greenish yellow. That is including the stems.

There's a log in my yard that fruits them from time to time. Had a huge flush last week, if more pop up I'll snap a few pics.

From their first flush the gills are green right outta the gate, I have not seen the stipes bruise green on fasciculare.

Sorry OP, I didn't read your full description, that was very irresponsible of me, if I had noticed the spore color I would not have said gymnopilus.

Are you sure it is not just brownish, some gym prints are almost pure brown looking with no orange tints and people can confuse this for purplish brown, I have seen a number of agrocybe, psilocybe, as well as psathyrella prints that were definitely brown but people said they were purplish brown.

yep almost identical but as they mature the cap opens upwards a bit and they get a bit wavy
they had a slight green bruise from cutting the stem, it was only a bit but definitely there. il get some more specimens and take some more prints and try get some pictures up.

If you can post a picture of the print, that would also help a bit.
did the gills and stem look like this? when you said "wavy stem" thats what i thought of.
