Rye Berry Substrate + Compost Method Question
    #11343164 - 10/29/09 01:07 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

About a month ago, I 'nocced up some rye berries and they're about ready to be added to the compost.

I was just curious, what's to keep the rye berries, especially those not completely covered in  mycelium, from growing into wheat grass in the compost. And if it does grow, is it a problem?

Thanks a lot.

Rye berries into wheat grass?  I am not a farmer but don't rye berries turn into rye?  Is that what you are asking if the rye will sprout into plants?  No this won't happen.

Lmao, yeah my mistake, I suppose it would be rye grass, wheat, barley, and rye are very similar, I grow them for my cat lol.

What keeps it from sprouting? I know from experience that shit will reach up to 5" in a couple days in normal soil.

Gotcha, I wonder if the mycelium kills it off or if it has something to do with the heat/humidity in the compost.

Anyway, thanks for the answer.

LOL ^^^^  Yeh I see what you mean tho i think...

Basically most seed won’t survive the harsh conditions presenting the sterilisation process.  The main reason people adopted cooking eons ago was the process of killing off bacteria, parasites, bugs etc.  For seeds its usually about 50C from memory before most will die off...

I’m not chemist /food-tech but I know from home brew that in the presence of heat helps the breakdown of many complex carbohydrate structures into simpler sugars etc as well so many Chemical changes in the seed are probably also at work...

Ahh, the sterilization, of course, that makes sense.
