Will 1/8 drill bit do?
    #11341920 - 10/28/09 11:32 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

That's what I got, and my cakes are ready to birth but I don't have a car to drive for at least a week so I can't get 1/4 so I'm stuck with 1/8.
Can I still do it?
1/4 is 2 times bigger than 1/8 right? So I drill 2 holes close to each other so it can act as 1 1/4 hole? Will it work this way?

Your cakes are ready to birth, what are you drilling?  What tek are you using?  If you are more specific you may get more answers.  Good Luck

As long as your syringes can fit through the hole. (I wouldn't recommend following this for your personal life :shoosh:)

Actually, it takes four 1/8" holes to equal one 1/4" hole.  Drill the holes about an inch apart from each other all the way around and you should be OK.  I tried bigger and smaller than 1/4" before settling on that, but fudging a bit either way isn't a deal killer.

Cool, and I thought you made a mistake posting there but you clarify it again here then I'm sure you're right.

But what I don't get is why is it 4 times bigger?
I mean 1/8=0.125 and 1/4=.25 and that 0.125X2=.25
so why is it 4 times and not 2 times?

You are calculating 'area'.

Get a piece of 2x4 or some other wood to put behind your tub as 'backing' when you drill.  All those holes ... you will lessen the chance of the plastic cracking as you push the drill bit.

Good luck.

Heh I can appreciate your humor but if you read the thread he's not talking about a hole in is jar lid, but in a shotgun FC :mushroom2:

The area of a circle is calculated by:  area = Pi(r2) where Pi=3.14 and r(radius) is 1/2 the diameter.

For a 1/8" hole, the area is 3.14 X (.0625 X .0625) = .0122 square inch.

For a 1/4" hole the area is 3.14 X (.125 X .125) = .049 square inch, which you can see is exactly four times the area of the 1/8" hole.

Or written in more general terms:

1)A=Pi*R^2 where A is the area of hole created by the bit (i.e. the cross-sectional area of the bit) and R is radius of the bit (which is 1/2 the bit diameter D).

2)Pi is constant therefore A is proportional to R^2. R is proportional to D (bit size).

3)Hence we can say: A2/A1=(D2/D1)^2
The proportion of area of the holes is equal to the square of the proportion of the bit size.

4)In this case: D2/D1=(1/8)/(1/4)=1/2

5)A2/A1=(D2/D1)^2=(1/2)^2=1/4
Thus we find that the area of the hole created by the 1/8" drill bit is 1/4 the size of that created by the 1/4" drill bit.
