Growth Idea...
    #1134137 - 12/12/02 05:23 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all,

I was thinkin about when my dad grew monster pumpkins for a summer hobbey. The basic idea was pick off all the immature fruits except for 1. Then the plant would be forced to pump nutes etc into the 1 fruit providing a nice monster fruit

Since my cat just does her growing for a hobby she may give this a try. Would the same idea work here? Pick off all the immature pins keeping 1 or 2 with the intention of growing a few badasses.

One of my cakes fruited only one mushroom last week. There were no other pins on it or aborts. It grew to about 11 inches. Not bad for an Ecuador.

So I would think that if you took off all pins that appear apart from the best looking one then you'll have the same effect.

The thing is that one large shroom from a cake is less shroom than eight smaller ones. But if you're wanting to grow some big mothers to impress the ladies with, then i think it would work. Just remember to dunk the cakes before hand to make sure that they're really hydrated.

Let us know how it goes.

From what i have read, this may be a bad idea...When you pull off the pins,  u could shock the mycelium thus causing a negative reaction which could cause that 1 shroom that your wanting to grow big to abort... If you've got enough cakes to play around with, you should go ahead, everyone likes experiments here..I'm just giving my 2 cents about how mycelium can take a shocking thats negative...If you do the experiment let us all know what happens...

Thanx!!

IME, this doesn't readily apply to shrooms. Granted the strains that produce only a few fruits tend to produce large fruits, but this isn't readily manipulatable. A strain that produces a lot of pins which are picked doesn't compensate in size of fruit IME.

The purpose of the fruit in the life cycle may be the reason. In a fruit, like a pumpkin, the fruit provides nutrients for the seed. With only one fruit, the plant wants that fruit to be the largest source of nutrients possible to ensure the survival of it's only seeds. Very different case with a fungus. The fruit body is only there to produce spores, not nutuure them. The only reasonable analogy would be that fewer shrooms means more spore production. That's neither desirable, neccesary, or true IME.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
