Go over your procedure, step by step.

I tried a batch w/o simmering and had 0 colonization, too dry.

I have used 6T's WBS tek without any problems.  You dont really need to remove all the floaters but sometimes it does help when it comes to seeing any contams in the jar.  Also,  make sure that your final rinse before loading your jars is in hot water, and let that drain for atleast an hour.  Do the hand test (put your hand fully into the WBS and pull it straight out, if a bunch of seeds stick, its too wet) before you load.
If it seems that it's taking too long to dry, sit it in front of a fan and turn it or mix it a few times.
Good Luck,

hwo do you prepare them? i like to soak and simmer them in advance, before sterilization, as opposed to putting dry seed and water in their container. after that you put the spores in and shake well. they colonize rather fast when i've done this.

are you putting enough spore solution in the jars?

are they incubating at a proper temp? (75-85ishF)

bird seed is easy.. get it with lots of millet and small stuff. not alotta sunflower seed. i have actually took the whole sunflower seed and put it in a jar and pc and it worked just as good. but i am growing oysters. i soak my wbs for 20-24 hrs in a clear rubbermaid container with a lid out side in the sun(not all day in mid summer). then i drain for 30 minutes or 2 hours doesn't usually matter. what r u doing?

I've got a recipe I like.

Rinse - remove floaters
Soak overnight
Simmer - adding in spent coffee grounds and gypsum.

Rinse well in hot water.  Spread out on a towel.  Use a couple paper towels to make sure they're nice and dry.

Load into jars and PC. 90 mins at 19-21 psi.

Inoculate with LC down 3 sides, shake well and allow to colonize.

You don't need to soak milo and millet all that long, they are tiny. And if you do soak 24 hours, you probably don't need to simmer much or any.
Is your grain squishy when you jar it up? Or does it still have some bite to it?

-this won't necessarily prevent colonization, but it can make for jars that are harder to work with.

I keep saying this but RR's Grain Tek is the shit. He demos with rye, but it works great for WBS.  I did five quarts of WBS last weekend. The grains get fully saturated and no more.

Rinse the HELL out of the grains with hot tap water. I soak with dilute coffee and gypsum OVERNIGHT and don't rinse after that. Because his tek incorporates a soak, you also allow the endospores to germinate, which makes the sterilization all that more effective.  Personally, I see no reason to do it any other way. I'm not getting the moisture issues I keep hearing about.

The biggest key to the right moisture content with this tek is in the straining immediately after simmering, and no rinse. Pour the hot grains into the strainer and let them steam off. Toss them around a bit and give them enough time to look dry, do the "paper towel test", then let it sit just a bit longer [I like to inoc with generous LC].

You can skip the coffee and gypsum, but I think gypsum, especially, is a great idea.

i agree

Stick with RR's tek when it comes to grains

www.mushroomvideos.com

the steam drain is key to success,
also dont soak for too long so the boil doesnt pop all the grains, 12 hours max IMO

never fails, works with any grain too

EDIT:

DAMN!! me too slow

Agreed. I tried everything and came back to that method.
Soak 4 hours, simmer about ten minutes, strain. Easy-peasy.

I should add that the final soak is cold. When I use coffee it's usually a little tepid, but not like the hot rinsing.

I disagree. In my recent test (15 jars of WBS) I soaked for about 20 hours, then rinsed/dried and PC'd.  I inoculated each jar with about 3cc of LC. Not a SINGLE SPECK of colonization and it's been almost a month now.  The grains are small and dry in comparison to a more recent batch that I didn't skip the simmer step.  I know the inoculant was good, I used it on some other stuff at the same time and they colonized just fine.

RINSE WELL
fill bucket with wbs 2/3 of the way with water
add 1 tbsp gypsum to water. MIX WELL
soak for 24 hours
RINSE WELL
simmer until you find a few busted grains (water temp like 160)
RINSE WELL
lay out on a towel and put a fan blowing over it
mix up seed every 15 minutes until it no longer sticks to your hand when you grab a handful and let it fall out

The seed does not need to be wet on the outside. The point of the soak and simmer is to get the moisture inside.

Or you can just follow this TEK,
and don't soak at all.
This is by far the simpliest WBS prep TEK.
I've been using this with great success.
