How contagious is the FluMist H1N1 virus?
    #11314320 - 10/24/09 07:40 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

The FluMist vaccine is an actual live virus that is genetically modified to restrict it to the upper respiratory system, but it is a live, contagious virus. I have yet to see any reports on the spread of this vaccine from person to person, but I can only assume that it is happening.

The H1N1 virus is more contagious than regular flu, but I'm not sure why. If it is because of some feature of the capsid (protein coat), wouldn't the FluMist virus have to have a similar or identical capsid to work? From what I understand, that is how vaccines work. The body identifies the virus by it's capsid, and develops antibodies that bind to this protein, and destroy the virus.

Similar to the standard live virus Flu Mist, it's a hazard for those with compromised or incompetent immune systems.

Chemo patients.
AIDS patients.
Newborns.
Anybody with leukemia. (probably?)
Others as noted by their doctors.

It's not much of a danger to an otherwise normal and healthy person. Interacting with somebody who has had the Flu Mist vaccine carries risk- but certainly far less risk than interacting with somebody who has the flu.

My brother's baby boy just had heart surgery, so I'm deffinitely not getting the FluMist vaccine. I haven't decided if I'm getting the shot yet.

I'm just intrigued by the idea of a contagious vaccine.

Is the H1N1 Flumist more contagious than the standard FluMist?

Couldn't we overcome the vaccine shortage with FluMist makeout parties?

Or stay away for two weeks. That's the policy where we do similar work.

Are you at risk? Do you normally get regular flu shots? Did you get one this year?

Smallpox vaccine used a live virus, as I recall. Others do too. (I think polio vaccine did originally, then they switched?)

Dunno. Probably about the same, is my guess. Rare but real.

Polio vaccine is live in some places, and inacctivated in others (I think it is the US where live vaccine is still used, with inactivatedi n most European countries.

Basically there is a minute chance of catching polio from live vaccine, so over the last 40 year about 15 people have got it. On the other hand live vaccine gives a stronger immune response, and longer protection - there is no right answer to which is best without a crystal ball!

Anyway vaccines are cool, and excellent inventions. Just to check FluMist is the one AstraZeneca bought not too long ago right?

All this fear mongering over the H1N1 left this college house laughing.

We were all "this is it? ahahhahaahahha";

and then four days later we were all feelin' good again. Only get the vaccine if you're really worried about the flu actually hurting you. If you're in good health and in your prime... I wouldn't even give it a second thought.

I have had neumonia twice in the last 6 months and both times it appeared out of nowhere.  This shit's gonna kill me when it hits again.

One of my good friends has just gotten over it like 3 days ago. He said he would never wish it upon anybody. He said the aches and pains were hell but other that, it's basically just a high fever.. I just hate the regular flu because that pain in your stomach right before you puke is the most painful thing in the world from what I remember.. N usually I dnt mind pukin on kratom or alcohol or anything else for that matter hah
